  • Bush Wants to Motivate You: New Speaking Tour

    by Claudine Zap

    Oct 27, 2009

Move over, Sarah Palin. There's a new guy in town ready to do the speaker circuit. And English is not his best language.

George Bush is back. That's right — his new gig: motivational speaker. Bush stepped out for his first big engagement in the U.S. (he's already been on the speaking circuit in Canada) to talk about how people's prayers really affected him in office, although he "could not prove it to you."

As the Fort-Worth Star Telegram noted, Bush told his audience that he still felt confident in his decisions, even if it hurt his popularity. He told the 11,000 supporters that popularity "is fleeting" and "not real."  The "Get Motivated" event included dancing to the Beach Boys "Surfin' USA" and throwing beach balls into the crowd.

According to the Christian Science Monitor, the light-hearted speech also included an admission that the Dallas resident now cleans up after his dog, Barney. Bush reportedly told the crowd, "Man, my life has changed!” The crowd ate it up.

The Washington Post wrote that the former president "Could have said a thesaurus was a big scaly creature that roamed the planet millions of years ago and they would have applauded." Youch.

All jokes aside, you will be hearing a lot more about the ex-president. He apparently has quite a few speeches planned, and a book about the 28 hardest decisions he ever made is due out next year. He's also got his library to plan, which will be at his wife's alma mater, Southern Methodist University, and a legacy to defend. If anyone is motivated, it's this guy.

  • Giant Shark vs. Even More Giant Shark

    by Mike Krumboltz

    Oct 27, 2009

If you find yourself Down Under anytime soon, do yourself a favor and stay out of the water. A giant 20 foot long shark was recently spotted attacking another shark off the coast of Australia. The gruesome scene was caught on camera and featured on "The Today Show."

According to witnesses, the great white shark nearly chomped all the way through its victim. The results: not pretty, but very buzzy. After the segment aired on NBC, Web lookups on "great white shark," "shark vs. shark," and "australia shark attack" all surged to the surface.

The Today Show story also mentions the famous 1975 film, "Jaws." According to Daily Mail online, the cinematic shark was 25 feet long. This newly spotted killer is just five feet away. And if it stays on its "anything goes diet," who knows -- it may hit another growth spurt.

Below, you can watch the story from "The Today Show." Beware, some of the images are quite graphic. After all, sharks aren't known for their manners.

  • Harvard Whodunit: Student Poisoning a Mystery

    by Claudine Zap

    Oct 26, 2009

Is there a doctor in the house? A group of students at a Harvard Medical School lab got sick after they made the mistake of drinking the coffee brewed there.

Six experienced dizziness and low blood pressure after sipping the toxic joe and were rushed to the hospital — and two students even passed out. Luckily, nobody experienced any long-term damage. The toxicology report has just been issued and the results are in: It was poison.

It's yet to be determined if the single brewer coffee machine was accidentally contaminated, or if someone was out to off the competition. (We do hear that Harvard is cut throat, but literally?) One victim has a theory: purposeful poisoning. He told the AP he thought the incident was too "strange" to be accidental, but wasn't fingering any suspects.

The scary stuff was identified as sodium azide, a common chemical preservative used in the school's lab — obviously not meant to be eaten. In response, the school is upping its security procedures, police are investigating, and the federal Occupational Health and Safety Administration is checking for any workplace violations. Here's an idea: No coffee machines in the lab.
