    A Fertile Field of Study

    by Vera H-C Chan

    Jul 10, 2009

In spring, a young man's fancy turns to thoughts of love. In science, it turns to spermatozoa. A bevy of studies on male reproductive cells has been unleashed in the past few weeks. To wit:

    • Quantity improves quality: Heard at the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology, an Australian researcher claimed conception rates improved with a steady sexual diet, rather than throttling back for maximum effect.

    • Delivering more than coals from Newcastle: The Newcastle University of England bragged in the journal Stem Cells and Development about creating human sperm cells from embryonic stem cells. Dubious party-poopers wanted to see them to believe it—and "in high resolution." The British researchers admit they need several more years "to improve the techniques" for a truer facsimile.

    • Fowl is fair and fair is fowl: The Proceedings of the Royal Society B published a study that took an awful close look at red junglefowl, which apparently could "adjust the speed and effectiveness of their sperm" based on how fair the female.

    • The prettier the package, the lighter the load: More English researchers will share their observations in "American Naturalist" journal that, as Science Daily sums up, "attractive males" have a lesser "sperm load." The theory goes, the better-looking the male (whatever the species), the higher the odds he'll get a female, so he doesn't have to try as hard.

Conversely, "less attractive males" have to "make the most of their meagre opportunities." Look for the September issue, under the gripping title, "The evolution of continuous variation in ejaculate expenditure strategy."

  • This Australian's Got Talent

    by Mike Krumboltz

    Jul 9, 2009

Here's something you might not have known: There are many different versions of "Dancing with the Stars." Right now, the competition is heating up in Australia, where big names are strutting their stuff.

The names may not be of the household variety to folks outside Australia, but one competitor is about to make a big splash on the Web. Gerrard Gosens, an adventurer and three-time paralympian, recently wowed audiences with a flawless waltz. What made the dance so impressive? Mr. Gosens is blind.

Gosens and his partner glided across the dance floor without missing a step, and, in the process, pushed lookups on "gerrard gosens dance" into breakout territory. Among the people watching the performance was Gosens mother, Carol O'Brien. In an interview with NewsMail, Ms. O'Brien explained that her son has a condition called aniridia "in which he was born without irises and lost his sight completely at age 14." Not surprisingly, Mum was quite proud of her boy. "I was amazed at him, he had a really nice rhythm."

You can see that rhythm for yourself below...

  • Oh, Baby: Evian Ad Is a Web Hit

    by Claudine Zap

    Jul 9, 2009

Here's what happens when you combine (computer-generated) babies on rollerskates, a boom-box beat, and some serious special effects: A video that's got the Web buzzing. Oh, and it's an ad for Evian mineral water.

The viral video channels street culture from the '70s. And then things get really weird. A bunch of computer-assisted babies clothed only in diapers and skates show off their hip-hop moves to a remix of Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight." The Evian bottles are props for the tykes' skate tricks. (So no "Popeye" moment of drinking the stuff and transforming into a super-fly baby.)

Already, lookups on the Web are on a roll: "evian roller skating babies," soared 225% in just one day. Queries are also surging on "roller skating babies," "skating babies," and "evian skating babies."

Here you can see it for yourself. Kids, do not try this at home.

Jan vs. Marcia: The Grudge Continues

    by Mike Krumboltz

    Jul 9, 2009

Jan Brady was always jealous of big sister Marcia on "The Brady Bunch." Has the bitterness crossed over into real life?

Fox News reports that Maureen McCormick, who played Marcia, feels that Eve Plumb (Jan) is upset over a joke Ms. McCormick made while promoting her memoir, "Here's the Story." Somebody call Alice to sort this out STAT!

A few years ago, McCormick said that she and Eve had a "lesbian love affair." McCormick insists it was simply a joke that was made for shock value. Now she's worried that Plumb didn't find it funny.

You see, the Brady kids were apparently invited to sit on Oprah's couch. Everyone accepted the invite except ol' Eve. Maureen concluded that her TV sister is holding a grudge. Makes sense to us: No former child star would ever turn down Oprah without a darn good reason.

The New York Post, which broke the story on its Page Six, checked in with Ms. Plumb to get her take on the so-called quarrel. Plumb's agent responded: "No one from Oprah called. We haven't turned down anything. There is no feud."

That settles that, but one question remains: How does Eve Plumb still have an agent?

McNair's Vacation Photos Cause a Stir

    by Mike Krumboltz

    Jul 9, 2009

The shooting death of Steve McNair has sparked a tremendous amount of interest in the relationship between the former NFL quarterback and his supposed killer, Sahel Kazemi.

Recent photos that surfaced on TMZ.com indicate that the two shared at least one vacation. The photos show McNair and Kazemi parasailing and relaxing on a boat. They look like any couple on vacation — there's nothing to indicate the shocking violence that would later come.

Unsurprisingly, lookups on "steve mcnair vacation photos" and "mcnair kazemi pictures" are through the roof. For more on McNair's funeral, and tributes from heartbroken fans, click here.
