  • The 11th Hour: The Date Behind Veterans Day

While most know that Veterans Day honors those who have served in the military, the meaning behind its exact date (November 11) may not be so familiar. Here's the backstory:

Back in 1918, in the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, a stop to hostilities was declared, ending World War I. An armistice to cease the fighting on the Western Front was signed by the Allied powers and Germany.

President Woodrow Wilson immediately proclaimed the day "Armistice Day," kicking off the annual commemoration on November 11. But over the years, with veterans returning from World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day — a day reserved to honor veterans returning from all wars. But 11/11 still represented the end of the Great War in the public's mind, and the date stuck.

In 1921, unidentified dead from the war were buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C., Westminster Abbey in London, and the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. The tradition to honor those killed in the war but never identified continues every year in the U.S. The ceremony is held at 11 a.m. at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery.

Congress designated Veterans Day as a legal holiday in 1938, and since then, most Americans have come to know it as a day for store sales and parades. Yahoo! Searches on the holiday have already surged on the Web. People want to know "veterans day history," "veterans day closings," veterans day sales," and "veterans day free meals."

We Stood For Freedom
We stood for freedom just like you
And loved the flag you cherish too

Our uniforms felt great to wear
You know the feel, and how you care

In step we marched, the cadence way
The same is true with you today

Oh how we tried to do our best
As you do now, from test to test

How young we were and proud to be
Defenders of true liberty

So many thoughts bind soldiers well
The facts may change, not how we jell

Each soldier past, and you now here
Do share what will not disappear

One thought now comes, straight from my heart
For soldiers home, who ve done their part

I m honored to have served with you
May Godly peace, help get you through

And now I ll end with a request
Do ponder this, while home at rest

America, respect our day
Each veteran, helped freedom stay

Huh, and 9/11 has created an endless stream of war veterans in search of Osama bin Elvis, I mean Saddam, I mean Iran, no, WMD's. Heck, all of this has gotten me a little confused.
9/11 TRUTH NOW

Actually, Arlington National Cemetery is in Virginia, not Washington DC as the author states.

Let's hope we can kick the a--hole liberals out of office before it's too late to save our country from those who wish to destroy us and our way of life. Whether they be foreign or domestic.

Semper fi!

In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Remember all who have fallen

I want to thank all the men who served our country. There fight to keep us free cannot be repaid. My husband was a Marine and served two duties in Viet Nam. I pray that we give all returning veterans better treatment than these men got when returning from war. They were spit at and called all sorts of things. Whether or not one agrees with why they are fighting, please remember these young men and women are serving this country for you.

I say to all Veterans those that gave all and those that gave, "You have done your part. Welcome home." Sadly are fight was and is in vain as those that think themselves above all others have turned our sacrifice into their personal gain as they send out more soldiers to die for them and to garnish more wealth unto themselves at the cost of many good soldiers lives. Remember the Soldiers on the battle field and remember the Veterans that have served before and please remember that those that sent us to war are traitors and do not deserve any respect from any true American. Respect the Soldier, but those that begin and continue these wars are not deserving of any respect and they should not be shown any.

each generation of brave & loyal americans proudly does it's part to ensure that we remain free. i would love to hear our troops cheered the way we exhault our football teams. imagine the pride they might feel. take the day off, go to the parades and show your support. it will be really good for "you" to praise our brave people.

its hard to believe all those pudgy old dudes were once strapping young bucks who fought for our country. and i mean that in the nicest way possible. its just odd to realize that the man who is now bagging my groceries was once, and still is, a hero.kind of sad too. thank you veterans!
