  • A Presidential Pardon (Me)

In the standoff between Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates and Sgt. James Crowley, President Barack Obama is the first to issue the regrets.

After a Cambridge police officer arrested a black man on his own porch on July 16, talk about a continued black-white racial divide erupted from coast to coast. On Wednesday, the president waded into the prickly mess during his primetime pitch for a health care revamp. The last question of the night asked his opinion about the Gates-Crowley matter. After making a joke or two, Obama stepped into it by saying the Cambridge police acted "stupidly."

    Use Adverbs with Caution
The "stupidly" comment was the parting shot heard round the nation. Gates' attorney Charles Ogletree (and Obama's former professor) felt the comments "right on terms in that we have a problem," but the Cambridge police force demanded an apology and Crowley himself (who teaches classes in racial profiling) said he was disappointed by the words although he supported his president 110%.

    Mea Culpa?
Two days later, however, Obama made a surprise appearance at his press secretary's daily briefing to recount a short telephone call with the sargeant. "I just had a conversation with Jim Crowley, the officer involved," he told the White House press corps. "My impression of him was that he was an outstanding police officer and a good man, and that was confirmed in the conversation and I told him that."

Did Obama apologize? Not exactly, but he did give his regrets that he contributed to "ratcheting up" the situation and gave the unfortunate impression that he was "maligning" the Cambridge police force and Crowley in particular.

    Reaction Shots
Regrets aside, the president said his basic impressions hadn't changed. "I continue to believe, based on what I heard, that there was an overreaction in pulling Professor Gates out of his home to the station. I also continue to believe, based on what I heard, Professor Gates overreacted as well."

His earlier call for "cooler heads" adds another layer on top of the issues of race and civil liberties, something that one Boston Globe column called "machismo." As Joan Vennochi put it: "The question is whether this police officer responded more harshly [to Gates' grouchiness] because of skin color. The answer isn’t obvious, but both men could use some sensitivity training. Gates shouldn’t have yelled at the police officer; still, what he did was irritating, not criminal. Once the officer determined Gates did live in the house, he should have left, no matter what the professor was shouting."

Breaking Bread or Just a Beer Bash?
State Senator Anthony Gallucio actually went to high school with Crowley and knows Gates. He doesn't believe "that their behavior was rooted in race," and is trying to set up a face-to-face. Maybe then two men—by all accounts smart, reasonable, and upstanding—might actually reach some accord and learn from what Obama has called the "teachable moment."

The president's offer of talking it over some beers still stands.

Only because he sees the trouble his comments are making, not because he thinks he was wrong. He owes some apologies on this one, and he needs to get to them! He should mind his business in Washington, and let the police handle theirs.

open mouth..insert foot!! How can he say the police acted stupidly when he did not know the whole story.. If Gates had been an intruder and cops did nothing they would have been accused of not doing their job!! No win situation for the cops these days but Prez should not have made any comments on it without knowing all of the facts.. Gates should have cooperated with the investigation and not acted like a jerk..

The minute we found out the kind of church he attended with the hatefilled Reverend Wright to this comment only show us how this president feels about the white comunity. This presidents agenda is about backdoor reperations and redistribution of wealth, nothing more and notthing less. What he said about this officer in the first place is exactly what he felt and meant to say and now he`s only back peddling because of the backlash. He`s not fit to run a country with such a diverse racial population and needs to step down.

One day, Obama will learn to keep his mouth SHUT. Just because Gates is his friend, don't jump in feet first until you know all the details. Gates is a racist and that won't ever change. Now Obama is considered a racist. He belittled the arresting officer BEFORE knowing all the details. Somebody should bitch slap Obama and Gates. Knock their dumb A$$'s into tomorrow..

It's not about race. It's about power. Why is the president getting involved with a petty crime of disturbing the peace?
He wants to control every aspect of our lives.
The power grab of this man is beyond comprehension. If we don't stop it soon, we'll all be living in a monarchy.

Now that my rant is over. I have a couple of legitimate questions to ask of you that still follow this man blindly.
1, In his own words he said he did not have the facts of the arrest, yet went on to say that the Cambridge police acted “Stupidly”. Do you not see that that he is the racial one?
2. He also has admitted having not read the health care bill but he continues to say it is what is needed. How does he know?
3. Did he not say that the stimulus would be a “shot in the arm” to the economy?
4. Did he not say that that unemployment would not go over 8% if we passed the stimulus?

5. Did he not say that all bills ready for his signature would be posted on the internet for 5 days before he signed them?
6. Did he not say that his administration would be the most transparent in history?
7. Did he not say that he would sign no bill if it contained pork?
How do you continue to believe in this man?
Please don’t start the name calling. Please if you respond, answer the questions truthfully.
Thank you

I belive that Obama means what he originally said and is only backsliding because of the amount of negative responses in regard to his comments and judgment.
And so it begins. And thats how the fight started!
Everyone should just learn to be nice from the beginning.

Obama shouldn't be running off at the mouth. He better start thinking
before he opens his mouth. He should be aware how his words
will be judged more than anybody's because he's always in a Catch 22
situation.

I chose Social Work against reaping millions from my father's Agency, after watching the KKK come into my neighborhood in Evergreen Park each Sunday. It was run by Mayor Anthony Vacco for so long and so segregated (not allowing for sales signs) that it is written in historical books as one of the most segregated in the US!

Now, I am sharing my concern. This is troubling me more than you could ever imagine. You have a gentleman on your staff, who appears to be biased and a bigot the other way. He has caused distress amongst city and police.

Obama was, also, apparently, as much at fault for undoing through allegation all that Martin Luther King accomplished. How do I know this? I know this because my son, Kyle, who was awarded the "Silver Bowl of Excellence" by Coretta Scott King in 2001(ST Paul Academy} and, was also your award winner of the Harvard Presidential Fellowship Award after Williams College.

No apology from Obama will make headlines.

I am sure all you Obama haters are cackling about how happy you are. The sad truth is a man was arrested in his own house by police that came without him calling, and even after knowledge that he lived there, the cop was a big enough jerk to throw the cuffs on him. Most cops have personality disorders, and I am sure this guy is no different. So go party tonight, you got your wish, it is easy to hate, but try being a real thinking human being for a change. What a concept.

you consider anger management classes and racial relations courses because it goes both ways. Your conduct was less than professional, it highly appears. You are the one, it appears, should be making an apology. This officer was required to investigate after a disturbance (was it a burglary) prior. Apparently, your less than civil response showed that you would doing reverse discrimination with you bigotry type slurs and out of control behavior. You were warned and warned, but apparently did not stop. So, neighbors, apparently, witnessed an out of control individual, who may have appeared to need a psychological evaluation. Reverse profiling, sir? What if the Officer had been Black?

I hold a Master's Degree in Social Work from Loyola University of Chicago.

Now, this experience is revealing, especially , after the "stupidity" of Obama to make allegations without all the facts. You, sir, became a troublemaker. But, was that your childish attempt?

My son received the Harvard Presidential Fellowship Award. He, also, received the "Silver Bowl of Excellence" from Coretta Scott King at St Paul Academy HS in 2001. I have never heard him speak disrespectfully to any of any color or origin. He is 26yrs, but appears to be much more grounded than you appear at your late age.

Your degree and status means nothing when you exhibit such behavior. And, apparently, there was a witness (Black witness, correct?) who is agreeing with SGT Crowley about your disorderly behavior.

It appears we now need a President to go on National television with an apology for his own "stupidity," (not the stupidity of the police) in commenting without conclusion reached. You should do likewise, I believe. You lost personal credibility for any past perceived accomplishments in your arena.

Gates, Jr and Obama...Are you really conducting yourselves as Martin Luther King would have desired. You appear to both have deep-rooted ego problems and both appear self-absorbed to the point where it can get dangerous and detrimental for others...power and control problems, guys?

what lower ranking cop is going to go against his superior?............then he has to worry about that rouge cop setting him up to get shot on duty..............Pres. Obama is being diplomatic, and I am sooo glad that he was honest about his feelings..............he mirrored the sentiements of most rational people..............remember, the DA and the police c***f apologized for crowley's bad behavior.

The lefties made clear over the past eight years that fairness means nothing to them. They cooked up the most outrageous lies about Bush and passed them off as fact, all the way from the WTCs to Katrina.

If they did recognize fairness, then turnabout would be fair play, and every single racist epithet imaginable ... yes, even that one ... would be on the table at this point.

I wonder if the POTUS will come to Utica, NY and tell the African-Americas who cheered on a man who was under arrest and assaulted the officer, slammed his head against the curb, resulting in a dislocated shoulder and stitches in his head, that their behavior was "stupid." I highly doubt it.
He is doing more to hurt race-realtions in this country than any true racist ever will!

Well, Jimmy, a police officer is paid to make judgment calls, and they are not always correct. You can hate all you want, but a good officer does not arrest normal taxpayers for charges that will be dropped unless they want to. Spare me the racist stuff. I did not say he was. I said he made an error in judgment. If asked now, I am sure Crowley would have let the incident pass without an arrest, it was not that important. He was flexing his muscles. This is where it got us.

Obama made a "big mistake"? Give me a break... going to war with a country without proper justification or manifest reason is a "big mistake". How the hell can Obama be a racist when half of his family is White? He must hate his mother.

To say the president can't be a racist because "half of his family is white" is illogical. It is not uncommon for biracial people have deep-seated issues about one of their ethnic heritages based on rejection as a child by children of both ethnicities. Being educated or wealthy does not mean being acculturated.
