  • Buzz Multiplex: Potterheads vs. Twilighters

The boy wizard's almost a man now—but he's no vampire slayer. "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" will shape actor Daniel Radcliffe into a romantic lead. Even as love comes to Harry in the form of his best pal's little sis, Ginny Weasley, is it too late for fickle fans pining for a toothier antihero?

Ever since "Twilight" slipped into the winter void that Potter left behind (when Warner Brothers opted for a summer release date), brooding vampires in body glitter have made wizards playing with wands and brooms look so, well, childish. Plenty of Potterheads have been going through hormonal changes since the first J.K. Rowling book debuted in 1997, and the movie in 2001. They may—as The Wall Street Journal puts it—"prefer the angsty teen romances and cooler, edgier characters."

Teen vampire angst scored a third-place in advance ticket sales and went on to earn $382 million globally. Not that Harry will go begging at his premiere: A Fandango press release reports that Potter No. 6 should pass the "Twilight" record, and Time magazine is calling this latest entry as "darker, richer and all grown up."

But the constant comparisons to the teen vampire series mean that people are seeing "Twilight" as the alpha franchise. Even Twilighters of the studio executive variety feel the need for professional courtesy: They're politely lying low while Harry's around since the "fans cross over so much" (Fandango's survey points to a 45% crossover).

The Potter-mania stirring up searches on Yahoo! shows much of the interest coming from kids under 18. Still, there's a lot of activity, as fans have been refreshing their Potter memories with searches like "list of harry potter books," "harry potter cast,""harry potter characters," "harry potter quiz," "harry potter wands," "harry potter lexicon," and the big question: "how many more potter films." Yet recent online searches for "New Moon"—which won't be released for another four months—almost rivals that of Wednesday's premiere.

    Some more Search factoids:

    • "Twilighters" tend to be female (85%), with a much bigger age range compared to Potter's youthful appeal.
    • Robert Pattinson, a Potter alum who plays the dangerous Edward Cullen, scores nearly triple Radcliffe's online buzz. You can't blame the 18-month cinematic absence: Add up Search buzz from the past 3 years, and Pattinson's still more popular. (Then again, even Radcliffe says Pattinson's the genuine sex symbol.)
    • The only person Pattinson has to look out for: Emma Watson, who reaps in more attention than both actors combined.
    • Bonnie Wright, the actress who plays Potter's love interest, hasn't had a chance to make an impression. Her searches are up more than 800%, but don't compare to Kristen Stewart.
    • Online queries for the "Twilight" cast (thanks to Taylor Lautner) would've beat out the entire Potter cast except for Watson.

With the next "Twilight" movie not due until November 20, moviegoers don't have to choose one over the other. Potter just better be sure to steer clear of Edward Cullen for No. 7.

While the "Twilight" series has made itself present in the hormonal teenage girl scene, it fails to properly create a suspenseful plot line that draws in anyone over the age of 15. The reading capacity required to mush through a Twilight book is that of a 5th grader and requires absolutely no imagination or thought (unless you are daydreaming about Rob's latest hairstyle disaster).

On that note, the "Harry Potter" series has been years in the making with intelligent twists and turns that the "Twilight" series could never dream up. If you want kids/teenagers/adults to read something of value, read a classic, or at least something with substance that leaves the reader in suspense.

i def enjoy Harry Potter more!!! It has more of the suspense and thriller element than Twilight. With that being said, I do like Twilight. At first I didn't like it, until I saw the movie. I think the characters in the movie gave it more life. And I'm a Jacob fan rather than an Edward fan. Team Jacob!

Twilight hits lonely girls and then becomes a fashion statement. Harry Potter hits everyone, and has enriching characters, lessons, and is an all around intriguing stories. I've read both series, and I always find myself thinking...what have I learned from Twilight? Vampires sparkle? But from Harry Potter we learn about friendship, loyalty, family, and priority. : ) No matter how popular Twilight becomes, Harry Potter always has its place in my heart.

I like them both. Each has its own pull. It's hard to lump them together because the point for each series is different. One is a love story the other is mainly good verses evil. Not that Harry Potter doesn’t have romance or Twilight the good verses evil but that’s not what I took as the main point. I can’t wait to see either movies 

The only reason Twilight is so popular is because of the romance. Edward, Bella...beautiful...bleh. C'mon, guys. Get a life. Haha.

I think this is really ridiculous. I read all of each series, and Harry Potter is totally way way better. Not only is it written much better, but the storyline is much more complex and interesting, as well as the characters that you grow to love easily. Twilight is all very easy and straightforward, you don't have to think, and every book is pretty much the same. Harry Potter will remembered as a well written classic, Twilight as a fad.

I like them both, Harry Potter has the magical essence i love and Twilight also gives the romatic part a go. the book of twilight was way better than the movie and i do admit that twilight could use some work. maybe now that they are bringing in the wolves it will change. either way i hope both moives are going to be great and give us fans what we want.

Harry Potter is a perfect series for any age group (that can obviously read), while Twilight is a series for hormone crazy females wanting to believe they have friends. Harry Potter has a multitude of morales and a strong central theme, Twilight has a depressed, psychotic, pathetic female (with vampires who sparkle (sparkle-pire or mermaids, can't decide) and werewolf Native Americans). If you like Twilight to an obsession point, look in a mirror and you will see a very lonely person. The only reason why Twilight buzz is so high, is because of all the HOG (Hormone Obssessed Girls) are franticly searching for the latest 'dish' on the series.

If Stephan King said "The only difference between J.K Rowling and Stephanie Meyer is that J.K can write well", it must be true.

I liked Twilight and its sequels when I first discovered them, but I have found that they lose their charm very quickly. Once you read them, you can't reread them.

However, I started reading Harry Potter in '99, and every time that I reread one of those novels I find something new. Also, the HP series has a plethora of good messages (trust your friends, love conquers all, evil will lose...), whereas Twilight's main message turns out to be: get married out of high school and have the *best* *life* *EVER*!

... so which do you think I think is better?

How can you enjoy reading a book or watching a movie when the characters have names that could be put to better use naming rats! *Twilight* all the way!

I've read both, but i must admit that HP appeals to a younger age, and i am completely in love with twilight right now, but i used to be the biggest HP fan! i think i've just grown out of it, as have many of my friends who now read twilight all the time.

I read the Twilight series after it seemed to suddenly pop up out of nowhere...I think it's a wonder I didn't get diabetes from that series! There were some points of it that I liked, but that whole Edward's not wanting to be with Bella because she was mortal, she not caring, breaking up because of it, blah blah blah, and that whiny little snot, Jacob Black...ugh. I thought that the last book was a huge disappointment, and that Jacob was trying to take over Bella's kid was just wrong (just because he "imprinted" doesn't mean that he's the girl's ruling force). In all, the Potter series is much better written, intelligent, and makes your heart pound with anticipation of what the next page will hold in store. Twilight...sorry, it doesn't even deserve the same space in the bookshelf as my Potter books.

I love both!!! But I have to say I like them for different things.. I go to Harry Potter for friendship, and Twilight for love.. I don't think I can choose my favorite.. But I also found this:

The only person Pattinson has to look out for: Emma Watson, who reaps in more attention than both actors combined.

To be surprising and probably wrong.

I used to be love Harry Potter when it first came out when I was like 11 and now 8 years later it does seem that I have "grown out" of it. Plus, Rob Pattinson is the most attractive man alive. Harry Potter is still good don't get me wrong but Twilight is fresh and hot haha

There is a huge difference in the well-written quality writing of a Harry Potter book and the typo-ridden, bad grammar for of the Twilight series. One takes the reader on a journey and lets you use your imagination, while the other ... doesn't. When all is said and done, years from now, adults and kids alike will still be picking up the Potter books to read and the Twilight books will be in the bargain bins at 75% off. One is a classic... the other doesn't even come close.
