  • Ruth Madoff Speaks

It's no secret that Bernie Madoff doesn't have many friends right now. In fact, newspapers can't seem to write his name without describing him as "disgraced." But what might come as a surprise is that his wife, Ruth, may be even more of a social pariah—not for what she's done, but rather for her silence regarding her husband's tremendous fall from grace.

Mrs. Madoff is aware of the brewing rage directed toward her. On Monday, she released a statement after her husband was sentenced to a staggering 150 years in prison. The statement acknowledged that her silence may have been interpreted as "indifference or lack of sympathy for the victims of my husband Bernie's crime." However, Mrs. Madoff writes that this is "exactly the opposite of the truth." She continues, "Not a day goes by when I don't ache over the stories that I have heard and read."

Still, while Mrs. Madoff hasn't been charged with any crime whatsoever, there are still those who believe it's open season on the Manhattanite. The New York Post recently published an article reporting that Mrs. Madoff was spotted riding a New York subway. Upon being recognized, Mrs. Madoff, obviously annoyed, asked the Post photographer if she was "having fun embarrassing [her]—and ruining [her] life."

But that wasn't the first public awkward moment suffered by Mrs. Madoff. Earlier this month, The New York Times reported that her hair salon, where she used to receive highlights every six weeks, told her not to return. The Times reports that Mrs. Madoff "is viewed as an unrepentant beneficiary of ill-gotten wealth, a petite and well-dressed embodiment of the collective, bloated greed that helped topple the stock market and the housing industry." Whether or not the public scorn is justified seems to be beside the point.

For whatever it's worth (probably not much to the victims of her husband's fraud), Mrs. Madoff has given up her claim to millions of dollars in joint assets. According to an agreement with United States prosecutors, Ruth will be left with $2.5 million. Sounds like a lot of money, but The Wall Street Journal reports that Mrs. Madoff may "still face claims" from government agencies like the SEC and trustees that are liquidating Bernie's assets.

Assuming she invests with a non-crook, Mrs. Madoff can expect to earn about $125,000 per year on her $2.5 million settlement. Adjusting to life on a fixed income will require a significant change in lifestyle. Still, that's a problem that many of her husband's victims would surely love to have.

It is hard to believe she (Mrs Madoof) had no idea of what was going on. I have not heard anyone not say they felt sorry for the victims of a crime after the were caught and or convicted. If anyone believes she will only live on what the court says, they should consider reinvesting with her running things. there could be a fair amount socked away with other people and off shore accounts in lots of different names.

The news just reported that his two sons recieved millions in loans fron the oldman. Where did they think he was coming up with the money if not from the fund. They're all guilty. The justice seems more interested in making deals then with finding the truth.

It doesn't matter to me whether she knew what was going on or not. I'm sure she did know something, but until it's proven that she participated in the scheme, I hold him accountable, not her. She's human, she's been a wife and mother, a socialite for awhile; I am hoping she will speak up more and tell us her side of things.

Simply who gives a damn what she claims she didn't know. It's guilt by association in this instance. She MUST have asked questions like..."Gee honey...where did that extra 10 million come from in our checking account?"
To assume that she is non-complicent is totally ridiculous and a insult to the victims. She isn't entitled to 2.5 million anything. More like 25 cents!

No one cares what she has to say. Madoff's family should be bankrupt like those of his clients. They deserve nothing. Everything they own should be sold and the proceeds divided among his victims. 150 years is too good for him unless science can find a way to keep him alive for every year of the sentence. Now that would be justice.

When I went to high school in the early 1970's, there was a Jewish kid in my class who told me that charity and forgiveness are Christian concepts, and that I should not look for them in a Jew.

Seeing as how many of Madoff's victims were Jews, I think Bernie is going to find this out the hard way.

I think this situation is a product of the greed that has sweep through our country for the last 8 years. The rich don't care about anything but their selves and their money. I don't believe for one second that any of them are sorry for what they did, I think their just sorry the got caught.

My husband and I live on less than $33,000/year. I wish I could live on $125K like Ruth will get. I don't feel that she should have been allowed that, but like it or not, that's what she's going to get. I hope she can learn from living with less and feel more compassion for those who were hurt by her husband's actions.

Lets just keep in mind how they hurt innocent people who were lied to just to accumulate money! This is a rotten crime and I think all benefits that came to all his friends and family should be investigated and returned to their victims. I mean all of the benefits! Stolen monies should always be returned if possible.

That was a lawyered statement. She doesn't give a s#@*t about anyone & has no remorse. She's also too stupid to realize that the $2.5 mil she has will all get eaten up by lawyer fees. The money the've hid has been placed in safe deposit boxes (in gold coins, diamonds, some cash & Eurpean bearer bonds. The accounts on the boxes are not in the name of Madoff.

I don't believe for a moment that she didn't know what was going on all these years. I am not sorry for her. In fact, I hope she ends up in the same place as Bernie. And if she doesn't, then I hope she rots in hell.

Sorry Ruth I don't buy it. You knew or just didn't care as long as you could look down your nose at the little people. Bu the way you aren't giving up joint accounts the court is taking it from you and I hope before it is over you loose the last 1-1/2 million so you can see how some of the families are living that your sorry ass husband stole their money. I don't feel sorry for you or your sons

Poor, poor Ruthie! Only $125,000.00 per year to live off of. How many of us would love to have that much to live off of??? Like MOST of US!!! I think she & her sons---the whole "kitten-caboodle" should be investigated & have to learn to earn an honest living.

Oh wow ... such scorn for an innocent bystander. A wife, a woman, a female life partner is not the equal to her minister of finance. How can anyone blame her for conditions beyond her control ?

Leave her nothing. Let her live off Social Security only, just like many of the people who lost everything they had thanks to her crooked husband. She had a high life while thousands of people were supporting her without knowing. I agree go after their children. They didn't know? Yes and I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell. Millons of other people were affected indirectly when the bum stole the money from charitable foundations. A man who steals from family and friends is trash and so is his wife. Not everyone who had money invested with him knew it. I certainly had no idea that my financial investment company had money in that scheme. I learned my lesson, put your savings under a mattress where they are safer.

They are leaving Ruth Madoff with $2.5 million. Two and a half million dollars. I could live the rest of my life WELL with two and a half million dollars.
And I'm a lot younger than she is. This is heinous. She absolutely knew what he was doing. Why aren't they going after her? She had full knowledge.

FRY RUTH TOO!
FRY RUTH TOO!

Why is she allowed to keep anything?, all of their wealth came from fraud and thievery, she should be forced to give all of it back to the victims........then she can really empathise with the folks whom are having to go back to work in their 80's.......what a bunch of trash the Madoff's are!

Bernie said today that Ruth has been "crying herself to sleep at night."

Was she crying herself to sleep in the seven million dollar apartment, the four million dollar home, or the 2.2 million dollar boat?

She said she "aches over the stories she has heard." But I'm thinking she doesn't "ache" enough to give her 2.5 million back to the victims from whom it came.

You know she and her family have millions of undiscovered cash stashed away somewhere; probably in one of the walls of their church. They were scamming everyone and were pretty smart about it which is why they got away with it so long. She won't be living uncomfortably; she just has to keep out of the public and media eye for a while and then next thing you know she'll be relaxing on a tropical island living off of her and her husband's evil greed.

This is Bernie's big last joke on us all. His kids got what they got through their dad. They are millionaires and had a huge headstart because of daddy's money. Bernie is old. He's had his day. He'll die soon anyway. Go after his kids. They had their headstart because their father is a crook. If you want to hurt the man, that's the way to do it.
