  • Pixar, Poor Grades, and a Lost Sense: Buzz Week In Review

Some weeks in the Buzz are thrilling. Others are inspiring. However, this past week was filled with some sad and discouraging news. Some of the noteworthy stories you may have missed: A child dying of cancer asked for (and received) a private screening of Pixar's "Up." A Chicago school announced that 44 of its 77 students won't graduate. Oh, and you know that nasal spray you've been using to help cure your cold? Turns out it might have taken away your sense of smell.

    A child's last wish
10-year-old Colby Curtin died of cancer this week, but before she passed away, her final wish was fulfilled. The child had desperately wanted to see the new Pixar movie, "Up." Unfortunately, she was too ill to go to the theater. According to various articles within the Buzz, Pixar was told of Colby's illness. The company sent a representative to deliver a DVD for Colby to watch in her room. Though she could no longer see, her mother narrated the action. Colby died several hours after the movie ended, and searches on "up movie make a wish" and "colby curtin up" both soared.

Tough times at South Side school
A Chicago school made an alarming announcement this week. Close to 60% of its students won't graduate from the eighth grade. The startling figure sent lookups on "Myra Bradwell Elementary School" spiking. An article from CBS 2 Chicago explains that many in the community are wondering who to blame for the students' failure. Some are pointing fingers at the parents, while those same parents are claiming they didn't receive any notice that their children were struggling (the school board claims that written notices were sent).

    What's that smell?
When will companies learn to stop trying to cure the common cold? Perhaps now, after the FDA charged Matrixx, the makers of Zicam, with selling a product that robbed people of their sense of smell. Matrixx called the claim "unwarranted." Still, the news caused a shockwave in Search as lookups roared on "zicam side effects," "zicam recall," and "loss of smell zicam." An article from CNN Money explains that because Zicam was classified as a homeopathic remedy, it was able to be marketed without "government oversight." Perhaps that loophole will soon be closed?

    Also buzzing this week...
    • Al Roker took it to the Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag on "The Today Show."
    • The highly anticipated, if awkwardly named, iPhone 3G S hit store shelves.
    • A rash of alleged UFO abductions struck our friends Down Under.

Please shoot me if I ever blame my parents for the times I had bad grades. It was all the getting beat up on the bus, tripped at recess, burned on the way home by cigarette lighters that made it hard to concentrate. It's the school's fault these kids aren't learning.
Maybe the parents should start showing up and watching over the school to make sure they are doing their jobs, which I'm sure they aren't. They don't have people skills. Obviously.

Kudos for Pixar in showing compassion; On Zicam, what happens if the FDA is lying like they did with DDT: Politics over reality? Their little ban killed millions in Africa indirectly since they had to stop using for our aid. If the parents are responsible for their kids education why do we need schools? Perhaps, homeschooling is a valid option after all.

This story brings tears to my eyes. I don't understand why the little ones of the world have to die so early in life. I am happy that there are still wonderful people in this world that care about others they do not know. A wonderful action for the day help someone you don't know, you'll have this warn feeling come over you, that makes you want to do it over and over again.
My heart goes out to the little girls family and may she rest in peace!

First cocaine and now Zicam, man is there anything we can, as proud tax paying (most of us anyway) Americans can put up our nose that won't cause a loss of smell. Maybe thoses with the loss of smell should consider buying those empty homes near the city dump, just a thought

How sad for us to have lost such a special child as Colby. We can rest a little easier knowing she flew up to Heaven riding on angels wings.
My love and sympathy goes to her family.

I lost my first child to Rhabdomysarcoma in 1996 and my third child last September to Leukemia(ALL). You have no idea how the simpliest things are all these children want in the end. I'm not sure if it's because she is cute so much as what the movie probably meant to her. Think of the bravery these kids pocess. I bet if I was 10 again and knew I was dying I would probably not even want to move.

Wikipedia..look up Benzedrex inhalors. You'll be shocked as to what children and adults are doing with them. A family member has been hospitalized for this. Law suits have been filed around the states and nothing has been done here in my state to take them off the shelves and make them put behind the counter. I've written letters and made calls and contacted the President of the United States my senators and congressmen. I will continue to write letters concerning how harmful these inhalors are to people!! I just pray my family member will get well. I will never again use another inhalor. Never.

I don't understand why the school or parents are always blamed when a kid does poorly -- blame the student. Trying to pass off responsibility to someone else is the reason why even college students learn to foist the blame on others for their own failures.

For all who think they have lost their sence of smell, it will eventually return. As far as this school is concerned; it may be the teachers.

My vice principle in high school told me something that turned out to be wrong because he was ignorant to certain facts.

A very touching story. And Colby is now at a better place, she is free from all the suffering and is very happy. But, at the same time she is waiting to see her loved ones again someday. And she KNOWS she will! Her mother and family can take some comfort by knowing this. www.tentmaker.org
