  • David Carradine's Most Memorable Character

As people look for the reason behind David Carradine's death by hanging, his ending is at odds with iconic TV image he created as Kwai Chang Caine in the 1972 series, "Kung Fu."

Whether he shunted aside Bruce Lee for the role as the biracial Shaolin monk wandering late 19th-century America is subject to debate. (According to his widow's biography, Lee had pitched the concept. The TV producers said it was a different pitch to tap into the hugely popular underground indies and Hong Kong martial arts movies.)

Regardless, Carradine got the role, and he became identified with Caine his entire career. The peacenik character, in search of a long-lost brother, was different than the '70s big-screen action heroes, quick to shoot punks and not prone to introspection.

Carradine's monk basically revamped the old cinematic Western frontier hero with modern touches: His "half-breed" (half Chinese, half white) background touched on the race issues, his Buddhism hit the Eastern spiritual craze, and the kung fu was downright exotic... although he didn't use his deadly skills unless he absolutely had to, which was pretty much every episode.

The show only lasted three years on ABC, but introduced a television audience to a new religion, fighting system, Chinese culture, and classic TV moments. Cue the intro: Young Caine has to walk on rice paper, and when Grasshopper (as his master Po called him) showed he could walk without leaving an imprint, he was ready to face the world.

As to why Grasshopper, the nickname came when his blind master asked what Caine could hear with his eyes closed. Courtesy of Wikipedia:

Master Po: Do you hear the grasshopper?
Caine: Old man, who is it that you hear these things?
Po: Young man, how is it that you do not?

Did he hang him self?, cos people (not famous) do it all over the world everyday, you just don't hear about it. Death is a level 'playing field' as in all souls that die are the same, never coming back. RIP

That's a sad end for a good actor and, by all accounts, a pretty decent guy. R I P .

Kwai Chang: Master, what is the best way to meet the loss of one we love?
Master Kan: By knowing that when we truly love it is never lost. It is only after death that the depth of the bond is truly felt and our loved one becomes more a part of us than was possible in life.
Kwai Chang: Are we only able to feel this toward those whom we have known and loved a long time?
Master Kan: Sometimes a stranger known to us for moments can spark our souls to kinship for eternity.
Kwai Chang: How can strangers take on such importance to our souls?
Master Kan: Bacause our soul does not keep time. It merely records growth.
I'll always remember you, Grasshopper.

I grew up watching David's dad play Dracula. It was just great when David and his brothers came our way with some of the best entertainment ever. I do not believe David died by his own hand.
PS I also liked his appearances on Wild West Tech.

My prayers are with his family. I've watched David Carradine for years and wish they would air Kung Fu again. At this point what matters is that if he felt alone or was in pain there's no pain now. Just pray for his soul, wife and kids, we loved him too.

In some fatality cases, the body of the asphyxiophilic individual is discovered naked or with genitalia in hand, with pornographic magazines nearby, with dildos or other sex toys present, or with evidence of having orgasmed prior to death.[7] Bodies found at the scene of an accidental death often show evidence of other paraphilic activities,[10] such as fetishistic cross-dressing and masochism.[3] However, in many cases families of these victims may disturb these sites by "sanitizing" them, removing evidence of such paraphilic activities.[11]

JD loved your comment, I wish I could print it. David Carradine should know how many fans he left behind. Nobody knows what was on his mind when he chose this method to die, but I hope he is at peace now.

Now for the rest of you. I don't think his family was with him. They said earlier he was alone in the room. I am now hearing on some television news rooms (CNN, HNN, and Fox to name a few) that word is coming back from the Thai authorities that he didn't die by hanging. They now believe he had a heart attack. Before we judge him why don't we wait to see the actual cause of death.

i was an avid 'kungfu master' fan in the '70s.. as a kid, i respected him and thought he really was the lone kungfu master and that kungfu was him. never was there a man who can really be the grasshopper.

David Carradine guarded his privacy during his lifetime. Can we respect it after his death... please?

A fine actor has left the world. We mourn for our own loss.

In public he was a gifted actor who created many wonderful characters. In private as with us all he was human too. Keep that in mind before pointing any misshaped fingers at any other person. Peace

Suicide results from losses..the loss of self-esteem, the loss of self-worth, and the most painful loss of all..self love. If we could have stopped it, it would not have happened It was never our decision. Grasshopper, Rest in Peace
