  • The Turf War Behind the Monster Jellyfish Crop Circle

Have aliens left another calling card?

Conspiracists — and Brits — are all atwitter about a crop circle that appeared at an Oxfordshire barley field. Instead of circles, the creators have become far more artistic (or they've figured out how to use Earth landmowers). The "circle" is in the shape of a 600-foot jellyfish — a first, as far as we know — and the BBC has posted an aerial video of the creature.

The overnight sensation launched Web searches for "jellyfish crop circle," "crop circles aliens," "crop circles conspiracies," and — for the DIY crowd — "crop circle patterns." Previous lawn artworks have appeared in the form of birds, butterflies, and, last year, the first 10 digits of pi (you know, 3.141592654).

OK, say this grassy rendering isn't an alien self-portrait. Even so, the massive carve-out is impressive. Karen Alexander, a croppy (the name for experts in this, er, field), says this one's "absolutely huge — roughly three times bigger than...most crop patterns, and extremely interesting. People have been aghast at the size of it. It is a complete monster."

What human motivations could lie behind this? The English countryside could be facing a turf war, as Oxfordshire looks to poach tourists from Wiltshire. That town's currently the crop-circle capital, thanks to a lovely 350-foot yin-yang symbol near an ancient burial mound. Or who knows? Maybe the recent outbreak is an homage to a late crop-circle researcher, who recently passed away at age 90.

Either way, lucky landowners Bill and Sally Ann Spence aren't thrilled about being the owner of a giant jellyfish imprint. Not that the artwork isn't "beautiful," but they're asking visitors to stop tramping over their poor crops for a look-see, and instead get a helicopter and hover. The Spences won't be asking the local cops to track down the renegade crop artists. As if earthling law enforcement has jurisdiction over alien jellyfish.

Isn't the theory behind this that scientists have been sending code to reach out to talk to other life forms and that instead of getting signals transmitted back directly to them, the "aliens" imprint a crop circle design as answer to the scientists' questions so that the information cannot be distorted and is viewed by all to see. So if this is true and the jellyfish is and answer to a question, what is the question?

Wasn't it proven a couple years ago that HUMANS were doing this???

Many groups have come forward over the years and demonstrated on camera how they create crop circles and especially this kind of complicated art, athough it is usually done at night and on the "sly". Why people keep suggesting it's done by "aliens" just shows you how absolutely naiive, stupid and ignorant so many people are. This crop circle art is no more "alien" than chocolate cake. These crop circle artists have done TV demonstrations on how they map out a field and mash down the crop using long boards with ropes attached to them. Only an idiot would keep thinking that "aliens" are responsible. It's the epitome of "stupid".

What a bunch of freakin morons. Find something better to do with your time. Trampling some poor farmers crops isnt art, its vandalism. If there are "aliens" out there I'd like to think they have a bit more evolved technology than a scycle and lawnmower. DANG!

SHSU, thats a really good question..... What would scientists ask that would get a jelly fish crop circle as an answer...... But, then again, the answer to the question you are asking, might be scarier......

The question is....How will humanity destroy themselves? The "jellyfish" is actually a mushroom cloud!

So they come across *how many* hundreds or thousands of light years to flatten crops in a field? And this is suppose to show intelligence? Puulleeeease. All it shows is a huge waste of time and energy, and even if these markings *were* caused by ETs, you would have to question their sanity.

you would think that aliens would have technology and leave a message in a video or something instead of doing it on corn fields lol i really don't think its aliens but its funny what people read lol

Well, the story is fine but the writer needs to do some research. Wiltshire is not a town as she claims, but a county. Yes, it is true that that is the part of England where all those patters have appeared, and it's truly amazing!

It's a good thing Bush still isnt the president cause he'd want to take the fight to the jellyfish and kill so many innocents in the ocean...LOL

Sara, If they feel the need to ask scary questions and get scary answers, then so be it. I will refuse to live in fear but will relish in the mysteries of the wonderful God given world, galaxy, universe, etc...
We live in such beauty and with the millions upon millions of galaxies that they have found (more galaxies in the universe than sands on this earth), well wouldn't it be a bit "cocky" of us to believe that there are no other life forms out there and that we are the most intelligent?? We haven't even figured out the mysteries of crystal energy....

Creative people are always looking for a different canvas on to which they display their talents. I'm suprised that some corporation hasn't bribed an artist to do their LOGO. Perhaps they are waiting for our return to the moon so that they can make a REALLY BIG statement.

Maybe it is a warning to us from the aliens, which I believe are beings from the future, that global warming has increased the population of jellyfish and eventually take over the oceans.

I don't believe it has been proven that humans are doing all of these, however, yes, I recall that two people admitted to doing them, and they showed how they did it. Problem is, they couldn't have done ALL of the crop circles, since they have shown up across the globe, and have been around for decades. Who's doing it, I haven't a clue.

You would think the Spence family would have heard or seen someone trespassing on to their land at some point in time. Makes you wonder who the artist is in the Spence family?

well i find all this very funny...it was proven that humans were the ones making the crop circles for one. two you have to remember no matter how modest one seems they can still be in on it all, its called acting you know like the ppl are supposed to do on tv and in movies...they do this as scams so the the ppl who believe have something to as some ppl say worship over...personally i do believe there are other forces out there we dont know about but as far as them coming here and marking our fields i dont think so i mean is that what we would do if we found them and visted them. no we wouldnt we would try to make contact...
