Elegiacal. Vivisepulture. Appoggiatura. Yeah, those seem tough to spell. But what about Susan Boyle, the name of our president, and the trademark of a U.S. train system?

Elementary school kids the world over are gathering this week for the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Thanks to documentaries, plays, movies, and the sheer spectacle of kids dismantling words bigger than the average person's entire vocabulary, the Bee even gets coverage by the likes of Sports Illustrated. Plus, lots of online attention: "spelling bee" terms have seen a collective 3,304% increase on Yahoo! Search, with a heartening chunk fueled by kids under 12.

All we have to say to the competitors, besides good luck, is: Wait until you grow up, when you'll have to deal with hundreds and thousands of new names and concepts every day. Forget spelling the name of the late Sri Lankan rebel leader Velupillai Prabhakaran: In the Search box, misspellers have savaged the first and last name of our own U.S. president ("barack oboma," "barak obama"), mangled the identity of radio show host Rush Limbaugh ("rush limba," "rush limbaug"), and abused the names of most of the "American Idol" contestants ("adam lamberg" for Adam Lambert). Good thing "Idol" voters just had to text numbers.

Hope—and good intentions—are not lost: Always spiking are searches for "spelling games," "spell check," "spell check technology," and oodles of dictionaries, both English and other. Below is a roundup of words, both recent and perennial, that can pose a struggle, and links to their proper spelling.

Some of this mis-spellings are simple common mistakes, like "mysapce", it's just a slip of the fingers. Or Brittany Spears, Britney is not the common spelling for that name. Or Chris Allen, Kris is not the common spelling for that name either. Some people just don't proof read their typing, and some people just really can't spell.

See? I just did it, accidentally, I meant to write "Some of these" not "Some of this". I need to practice what I preach I guess.

It isn't just a simple mistake. You can easily ruin your credibility in the working world. I've seen memos from new bosses explaining the new goals and mission of the company only to butcher the spelling and instantly we look at each other and say "This is our new manager" No one is perfect but you better be when you are in charge. Workers will pounce all over you.

I'm a writer now and I get down on my hands and knees at least once a day and thank whatever gods there may be for Spellcheck tech. My daughter before she grew up and mutinied and abandoned me for her own happy life and adulthood was a whiz kid speller who always proofed for me and when she was gone I was faced with my ignorance all alone. : ) I am mortified sometimes when I read back through these postings about my terrible spelling. I make pathetic apologies and excuses, saying it's my bad eyesight. Also, never ever push Ctrl and "n".

Another wasted minute of my life I will never get back. I mean people make mistakes, who cares. Honestly the myspace one is very simple to misspell because their thinking of what you put in the address bar in your browser. Yawns.....

I think tiredness is also a contributing factor. Some people, such as myself, are up at two or even three in the morning surfing the Internet. When it's two in the morning and you're on your third Dr. Pepper, spelling errors are bound to happen.
