  • What a Difference 10 Minutes Makes: "Wolverine" Leak Controversy Flares Anew

Not too many summer blockbusters prompt FBI investigations, but the Feds have been tracking the villain(s) who leaked a rough cut of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" on March 31. Criminal investigations aside, the bootleg unleashed a torrent download, blogosphere reviews, and pirated DVDs on sale all over the globe. Even a Fox News columnist got axed when he published his (rave) review about the illegal screener.

The studio, 20th Century Fox, has been huffing and puffing to undo any box-office damage, including a promise that the final version—due May 1—would be different. But now the Huffington Post begs to differ. Here's the back-and-forth:

    • The leak was bad, very bad, but Fox chairman Tom Rothman declares that the bootleg's raw, "10 minutes shorter" and a "complete misrepresentation."
    • That's a lie, according to the Huffington Post, which points a finger at the official running time: 107 minutes, same as the bootleg.
    • Just lunacy, retorts Fox. Yes, the movie runs 107 minutes, but the spruced-up final includes new edits, music, wirework, effects, and footage.

The exchange likely won't change the movie's status as a summer must-see. Plus, the title has dropped from the 10 most pirated film list as the premiere gets closer. In the past week, "X-Men Origins" pulled in the most blockbuster title searches on Yahoo!, edging out "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" and "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen." ("Wolverine," though, hasn't inspired the same online fervor that "Iron Man" did last summer.)

What the promises and fingerpointing could do is revive conspiracy whispers, like the rumor that the leak was "nothing more than guerrilla marketing to the nth degree." Early buzz hadn't been kind about "Wolverine's" solo outing, but the fuss (did we mention the FBI?) kicked up publicity. So even if the mutant sinks, Huffpo points out, Fox can blame the cyberpirates. Sounds like a new plot for another "X-Men" outing.

Just like the cartoon, and the other three movies wolverine is all talk. Four movies and his kill total is somewhere around three. Most of the action scenes are way too much over the top. Marvel should just convert their comics to Japanese style OVA.

the first half was goin good then everything went downhill really fast. WTF did they do to Deadpool. smh why cant they ever follow what happens in the comics or video games instead of making up their garbage thats just terrible. its the story lines and plot from the games and comics that make then epic but they refuse to follow them and only take their name and destroy them.

Has anyone thought to mention that this alledged "leak" may have come directly off the Fox lot? That someone at Fox is trying to make hay before this possible dud goes to screen? We hear about "sneak peeks" and focus groups all the time so wouldn't it be likely and a little logical that Twentieth Century Fox planted the film on the web to get feedback from the audience before it loses it's behinds on yet another bad film in the theaters and just went straight to PPV/DVD?
And the FBI investigation angle is just a way to cover it's apparent gaff?

I had a roommate that downloaded the movie way before it came out and I told him that he needs to stop getting movies before they come out in the theater. He is a total dumb@$$ and doesn't think about that. This isn't the first time either, maybe a handful of movies. I just don't buy movies anymore, just see them in the theater.

I saw the movie about three weeks ago and it looks as if they did this movie in a hurry. Okay plot but a little hokey at times. All in all it wouldn't have been worth the ten bucks had I paid to see it in the theater. DEFINITELY A DVD RENTAL caliber movie.

I saw the movie and this was a direct leak from someone at Fox Studio, the movie was totally clear and there were certain CGI affects that were not complete gave the movie a cartoon look.

The people I know that watch bootlegs never go to the movies anyway and have a lower socioeconomic status; they can't afford pricey theaters. If it affects anything, it's the dvd sales and rentals. More than enough reason for studios to go after bootleggers. Studios ought to offer rewards for bootleggers to combat the problem. Bootleggers own clients would turn them in for a few thousand dollars, even a few hundred.

For people who actually defend this crap-fest of a movie, that just goes to show that you'll watch any s*** that the studios throw up there on screen.

So, it has Wolvie in the movie. Big deal. Wolvie being in a movie does NOT make it a good movie.

A decent story, some plotting, strong character development, and nice dialog goes A LONG way.

Remember how painful the Star Wars prequels were? Remember how vomit-inducing Anakin's and Padme's sham romance was? Remember how Speilberg threw in that alien curve ball into Indiana Jones Crystal Skull movie?

Yeah... now you're starting to catch on.

It appears Vera H-C Chan reads the Marvel Movie Blog. They had posted a summary of the back and forth earlier that day:

There is no need to argue whether or not the film released was the real deal or not we will find out in about a week.
