The Buzz Weekend Recap
by Jon BrooksApr 12, 2009
This weekend, the Obama family picks a puppy, a three-way playoff decides the Masters tournament, and the Navy uses deadly force in rescuing an American cargo ship captain from pirates. Just a few of the most popular stories on Yahoo! Buzz over the past several days ...
The first doggy
Harry Truman once remarked, "You want a friend in Washington? Get a dog." Eisenhower, Reagan, Ford, Clinton, LBJ and both Bushes all kept dogs in the White House. Now, with the nation still fighting two wars as well as a once-in-a-lifetime economic crisis, Americans can be forgiven for briefly and massively turning their attention to the latest capital canine, aka the Obama dog, aka Bo. That's right, the first family has finally picked a pooch, a Portuguese water dog. The Washington Post barked first on the story, but now everybody's yapping. The dog, a gift from Sen. Ted Kennedy, fulfills a promise the president made to his daughters, Malia and Sasha, during the campaign. Warning: Bo's buzz might grow when he makes his debut on Tuesday.
The Masters
The Masters tournament was the No. 1 story in Yahoo! Buzz Sunday afternoon. Angel Cabrera beat Kenny Perry and Chad Campbell in a three-way playoff. Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods made a late charge for the green jacket, but came up short, finishing fifth and tied for sixth, respectively. On Buzz, a Yahoo! Sports column asking the question, "Did Phil and Tiger choke away the Masters" received a lot of attention, and as usual, Woods won the competition as top searched-for golfer by at least a couple of eagles (with Seve Ballesteros coming in a distant second). Cabrera, an Argentinian, is the first South American to win the tournament.
Navy rescues captain from pirates
Buzz users rushed on Sunday to read about the rescue of an American cargo ship captain after U.S. Navy snipers killed three of the Somali pirates holding him captive. A fourth pirate is in military custody. Reports say that President Obama had signed off on a Pentagon request for use of force against Capt. Richard Phillips'
captors. Phillips' crew members said the captain had offered himself as
a hostage so that they could escape. Somali pirates are holding more
than a dozen ships and 200 sailors from around the world for ransom. Yahoo! News provides ongoing coverage.
