  • Pistachio Recall Alarms the Web

Just when you thought it was safe to eat nuts, the FDA is warning consumers to avoid pistachios due to salmonella fears. Fortunately, folks are getting the message loud and clear. Lookups are soaring on "pistachio recall" (+9,012% in Search), "fda.gov" (+1,675%), and "salmonella symptoms" (+264%).

As is often the case when a scary new illness makes its way into the public space, queries for "salmonella symptoms" boasted an especially quick surge. Concerned folks want to know if they have any cause for alarm.

The San Jose Mercury News explains that "healthy people exposed to salmonella may experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain." Health officials say that folks should seek medical assitance if they have any of these symptoms. To be safe, the FDA recommends consumers not eat any pistachios until "the scope of the contamination" is clear.

So, what sort of products are affected? According to MSNBC, California-based Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella Inc., was recalling more than 2 million pounds of the roasted nut. So far, there are no confirmed illnesses, however "two people called the FDA complaining of gastrointestinal illness that could be associated with the nuts."

Additionally, there is concern over products like spices and ice cream that may use pistachios. Officials are currently investigating what other products may need to be recalled. Again, to be on the safe side, stick with pretzels until somebody from the FDA says otherwise.

CHICgirl-CHIC:Cooking and Hospitality Institute of Chicago. Yes, I go to culinary school. I just got done with Food Safety and Sanitation. For there to be a food borne illness only 2 people have to complain. The FDA was right in recalling stuff. And the company started the recall so unlike the peanut people they are taking the RIGHT steps!!!

FDA - you are morally bankrupt and we don't believe anything you have to say. Whenever someone has found cures for Cancer you were the first to send your black-masked SWAT teams to raid the research facilities. Wake up AMERICA!

The FDA also hates blueberries and raw milk. I just want them to go away and leave us alone. We don't need them. We don't need them.

Salmonella *is* scary stuff, no doubt. So far, not much reported on how the nuts were contaminated - *not* any easy thing to do! I have to wonder if all these reported contaminated food scares (pistachioes, spinach, tomatoes, etc.) aren't playing up for mandatory passage of the so-called "Food Safety Act" - HB-875. This would *definitely* solve the food contamination problem - by putting all small farmers and vegetable/fruit stands out of business.

Poor science . Cause and effect very difficult to determine for any scientist . 2 people is cautionary in the extreme . What a way for anyone to manipulate the market , alter a market and/or business , and terrorize a nation ! Crying wolf has a steep price . Silence also a risk . But 2 people ? Consequences of hysterical over reaction are as powerful as a perceived threat could become . We need better science and more rational considered thought .

I feel that the FDA is too often trigger-happy. They immediately step in when there is more than one complaint of some feeling ill, even when the symptoms end up being the result of the flu and not contaminated food. Although I completely agree that the processing plant and food samples should be examined, this should not be cause for the FDA to go in with guns-a-blazing.

The FDA has no proof whatsoever. "Two people called the FDA complaining of GI problems associated with the nuts"----lets see: Maybe the people forgot to wash their hands before eating, or maybe these two people suffer from some health problems. Sounds like FDA is contaminated with salmonella in their thinking to warn the public when no link has been established. Obama should abolish the FDA. Such a waste of skin.

They say two(2) people, but I think in FDA terms it's actually two-hundred(200) or two-thousand(2,000) people, I can't see them doing a recall because 2 people complained of GI problems (too money hungry for that), you know they will tell the public anything to try and blind side us from the reality that it's actually way more than they are telling, just think about it...

1. Until bacteria is identified and confirmed, should be illegal crying wolf, akin to false crime report, or pulling the fire alarm for laughs. No need to alarm that early, and it it has a great economic cost if they do. If this company recalls millions of lbs. of nuts, it is costly, layoffs will ensue, and economic effects extend beyond just the company for some time.

2. Easy confirmation of bacteria for only 2 (two), I repeat, 1+1 reports. We're not talking 30, 86 reports. Under 1 hr the company finds the batch numbers for the 2 reported localities. Under 24 hr the batches are retrieved from the all stores in the 2 (or 1) locs, sampled and tested. If no bacteria found, go another 24 hr testing 2x or more first sample. Meanwhile, any more reports? No more reports- might be an anomaly - 2 people were contaminated on the same day doing chicken, no handwash, snacking on nuts - I've done that.

On 3/24 Kraft Foods Inc. notified the FDA that routine product testing had detected salmonella in roasted pistachios. Kraft and the Georgia Nut Co. recalled their Back to Nature Nantucket Blend trail mix the next day.
The FDA then contacted Setton Pistachio based on the supplier info provided by Kraft, which prompted Setton Pistachio to issue their own recall which was duly reported in the press.
Based on that recall announcement two people notified the FDA they may have been sickened by eating pistachios.
This particular article was poorly written in that it left out these facts but my God...do people really think folks just dial up the FDA for a sick stomach before they call their own doctors and that the FDA then orders recalls of everything those two people may have eaten?

why are peopke in here so ignorant? You know why drugs are cheaper in Canada? Because the FDA is way more strict on which drugs can be sold, and our drugs are more potent. The FDA doesn't allow some drugs to be sold that other countries would see becuase of that it's a but more expensive, but they also are way more effective than other countries medication.

I work in the pistachio industry and their reasoning does not solve the underlying problem. So, how did the raw nuts become contaminated with salmonella? This does not compare to the peanut recall. The Peanut Co had numerous health violations and sanitary issues (rat feces, etc). There is no report of such a thing at Setton.

Braga Organic Farms has safe, delicious organic nuts. The pistachios are grown on a family farm. http://www.buyorganicnuts.com Support your local, organic grower.

Babylon WILL fall!!
Look at all of these food scares and contaminations and every other unsafe thing that the FDA is approving. Cloned meat?? And they aren't even going to let us know on the label!! Now they are talking about cloning cow's milk!! The FDA works with every major company and gets a cut of the money and that's why they approve it. It means NOTHING for something to be FDA approved because they are as crooked as the ones making the products for us. What kind of craziness is REALLY going on in America?? This is BABYLON and for all those who want to be standing on the sinking sand go ahead!! People need to be more aware and stop living in your own little world. This is reality and part of what God has in store for America for all the horrible things they have done from the beginning of time. Jah Rastafari! And if ANYONE thinks I am crazy it's all good because I know I am not and you will all see when Jah is ready to come and take His place! Rastafari!

This is a quote from an unpaid forced laborer in China. Curiously, pistachios are shipped there and back when they're processed.
“We had to put the pistachio nuts in water first so the shell became softer—some prisoners used urine for this step,”
I spared the other details worse than this. Check it out.

Like I said before this FDA should be replaced or split
Into two companies one for drug companies and one for food companies.
So something to that and yes there is some people that does make false reports
They publicly do this for large companies for exploiting the food prices
Just like Drug companies get rich off backs of sick people.

Now getting back to the pistachios like one of bushes scare tatices getting people to
Panic to much to many dum people that belived it this and that just so big companies can make big $ off it just like this mess over all bail outs all car companies AIG
If american would of done this crap 20 years ago we wouldn’t be in this load of crap now

Lets these company clear chapter 13
Let cars company make elec car’s h-20 hybreed/ biocoil /smart cars
Solar panel / wind power building/land cross the usa.
Stop waste money on pork projects

Wouldn't have this 10trillion BS

My mother needed cataract surgery at 75. They found high blood pressure and forced her to take drugs despite her protests. She said she had high blood pressure since she was a teenager. At the time she was 75 and had been healthy and never been to a doctor. I watched her go downhill AFTER getting on the FDA drugs. She faithfully did everything the docs said. For 8 years she got worse and worse. All the while the doctors kept prescribing more drugs and assured her everything is OK. They finally killed her with all their poisons. Good job FDA! We are all a bunch of stupid, blind trusting sheep. These people do not care about people. They worship their money and power. May God have mercy on them and grant them repentance for their souls' sakes and our health's sake.

Look up the words "FDA cherries" on a search engine and you will see that they went after cherry farmers for daring to say cherries are good for you. They did the same with raw milk. Look up "raw milk swat amish" on a search engine and you will see people being persecuted for raw milk. How can these jerks sleep at night?

The Greek word pharmakeia is translated 'sorcery' in the Bible. We get our English word 'pharmacy' from this. Do you see a connection?
