  • Finally, a Flying Car

For decades, humankind has suffered the indignity of commercial air travel. The security lines. The middle seats. The surly flight attendants. It's enough to make a person say, "I'd rather drive my car." Well, the Terrafugia Transition hopes to do you one better. It wants to let you "fly" your car.

Yep, the much talked about flying car is finally here. Terrafugia has manufactured a two-seater called the Transition. And, in 30 seconds, it can be transformed from an extremely ugly automobile into an honest-to-goodness plane that goes about 115 mph.

After a test flight for reporters, queries on "terrafugia" and "flying car" both soared into the stratosphere. The Boston Herald chimed in with their thoughts on the future of the Transition, and notes that while the idea of owning a flying car is certainly appealing, the reality won't come cheap. Sticker price is a jaw-dropping $194,000. And, of course, drivers will need a pilot's license as well. Maybe sitting in 22B isn't so bad after all.

I think its awesome , but d*^%! what about the fuel. Its way to exspensive. I hope the technology survives though and in 5o years they're alot cheaper. maybe even they can even modify the things to serve as personal space crafts that can be launcehed from space and roll around on the moon.Come on with it!!!

Pilot's licenses aren't too hard to get, but if I had that kind of cash to blow on alternative transportation I think I'd go for a small, pre-owned private plane. I could buy one outright, and pay for fuel and hangar space for at least a few years, for that kind of money. A Cessna 4-banger might have a higher airspeed and longer flight range, to boot.

yeah it sound cool but can you imagine the extra headache for air traffic control. who is to say terrorist won't use this as more convienent source of attacks. No thanks, I have enough problems with traffic jams and accidents don't need the added headache!

I think this is great!!!! If I had the money, I'd be buying one and have someone fly me/drive me around.

I am a commercial rated pilot...and must say that this type of technology should probably NOT be made to the general public even if it were affordable! A person would definately have to be rated as a pilot, but there some who do not have the ability to drive a car proficiently! Can one imagine what the ramifications would be if the person who can't manage the functions of an automobile were exposed to both technologies at the same time? Keep me out of the skies if flying cars ever become mainstream!!! I'll take an airline any day of the week! How many backup systems does this have in comparison to an A320?

It is good to do research like this, because eventually it will be reality that the everyday person moves around this way. Most likely it would not be a viable mode of transportation for a long time, but this at least delves into the idea that someday flight could be available to the common commuter. Very cool.

If you could afford this, I'd imagine that you already own a provate plane. And I'm sure it is totally not legal to drive on the roads in this thing.

Oh brother... Look at this car that turns into a plane! It's stupid! You still have to drive to the airport, get clearance, get a runway schedule & wait. There's no bathroom or in flight snack. And how far do they think you'll get on a tank of gas? For $200,000!!!! They MUST be kidding.

flying cars.... back to the future or what?? now do you wonder if they will ever become cheap enough in your life time to own one???
hahahahaha not right now.. not at $194,000 thats almost 10 years salary for most of america. with out paying bills !!! even with paying bills i would own a home before buying one of those car/planes... and thats a fact!!!!!

I have to agree with irolle81. Just think of all the accidents we have on the road? imagine a police chase in the air? the catastrophic damage one can cause in the air? what goes up must come down right? who will it come down on?

In time just like everything the price will come down and the design will be better. When pc were first developing they were at least $1,000 a peice, at a fraction of the memory and processor spead. Now you can get a net book with about 1 GB of RAM and a bout 160 GB of memory for less than $300. Give it time.

The thing bugs me out, and continues to bug me out with new coming technology, kind of relates to the "Fifth Element" comment. The future is now! I mean think about it, the one lady who came back from Iraq with the bionic arm, that Robot that honda has developed that can see, hear, and speak 7 languages, and be a crossing guard; all of these sci-fi archetypes are being developed and used now, and not in some conspiracy theory kind of way; its out in the open. It isn't unreasonable to say that by the time I'm dead, I will have seen all of this stuff become what it was in "Terminator", "I, Robot", or the "Fifth Element". Am I the only one freaked out by that, lol.

$194,000 is cheap if you happen to be part of terrorist group. They have plenty of money and should be able to snap up several of them without blinking an eye.

And since we already know that there are a number of them who have pilot's licenses, it should be just a matter of time before we see them flying over schools, shopping malls and government buildings.

Al-Queda is probably drooling at the prospect.

This isn't the first time a flying car has been invented. They did decades ago but it wasn't convenient because you had to attach and disconnect certain parts.

you know they had all the same gripes and complaints about the car being a death trap when it first came out. and then seat belts became standard. then air bags. plus many other safety features. just like digital tv, the transition will take a while, safety features will be developed, prices will come down. training will be given, laws will be made, etc etc. honestly, i think police will crack down on DUIs even more with this type of vehicle than they have with cars...given the risk involved. you can't project ALL of the risks of driving onto something like this.

my biggest hope is that with GPS for cars and auto-pilot for aircraft, soon just touching a button on the dash will fly you from one place to another, and not have to worry so much about DUIs and such. honestly, auto-pilot will be MUCH easier to implement on aircraft than it will be on cars. i think this is the way to go.
