  • Not So Sweet on Caroline

She may have the Kennedy name, the Kennedy money, and the desire to serve the public. But for someone pursuing a plum U.S. Senate seat, this will only get you so far. Caroline Kennedy, daughter of the late President John F. Kennedy, is having a rough start in her quest to be appointed to Hillary Clinton's vacant Senate seat.

First, Kennedy was criticized for not talking. Then she opened her mouth, and critics complained she was too vague on policy — and not New York enough. She's even been critiqued for certain unfortunate verbal crutches. In an interview with the New York Times, she responded to a question about her rival to the seat, Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, this way: "I'm, you know, actually, Andrew Cuomo is someone I've known for many, many years, and we've talked, you know, throughout this process, so, you know, we have a really good relationship and I admire the work he's doing now and what he's done."

The Times helpfully pointed out she peppered her answer with three "you knows." Not exactly the stuff of "ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country."

In fact, since her public debut, critics have gone from comparing Kennedy to Hillary Clinton to linking her to the failed vice presidential candidacy of Sarah Palin.

Salon.com's Joan Walsh wrote of Kennedy's media interviews: "Overall, she was slippery, and regrettably, because I admire her, I came away with the feeling that she views her single best credential for the Senate seat as her celebrity, and, secondarily, her wealth."

Yahoo.com quoted a New York Daily News columnist as gleefully reporting, "the wheels of the bandwagon are coming off."

To be fair, plenty of pols mangle the English language (the current outgoing president comes to mind), are purposely vague on prescriptions to fix what ails the country, and come from family dynasties. Maybe Caroline Kennedy is simply experiencing the typical come-down from pedestal to the political. And it ain't pretty.

Of course, as Time.com pointed out, "being a Kennedy has not exactly proved to be an obstacle to success over the past century of American life."

Despite her bumpy introduction under the glare of national media scrutiny, support for Kennedy's candidacy is growing with the one person who may matter most: New York Gov. Paterson is reportedly still considering her as a top candidate to replace Clinton.

Having Caroline in office, finally, is still far better than having the senate without her or her Uncle. It may have been better, that she have been taught the old-fashioned way, while family was still in office, yet the past is. The year is 2009, as we are moving forward, as we need to be.

Why was the Associated Press so much a part of the attack on Sarah Palin's supposed unreadiness for office, but now taking an arm's-length approach to the attacks on Caroline Kennedy? The AP is treating the Caroline story as if it's an academic question, even suggesting that Caroline is a victim. Yet Sarah was treated by the AP with almost gleeful contempt. It shows, again, the liberal bias in the mainstream press. The AP is sorry that the liberal is slipping up, but was happy that the conservative slipped up and helped bury her.

I was disappointed that she abandoned Hillary Clinton but I think she's better than others that have been appointed...no one complained about Sonny Bono's wife? Caroline has some credentials & accomplishments. I suspect the good boys thought it was their's to take and resent the competition. Go Caroline!!

Please, let's get rid of the dynasties. Caroline has no other qualifications besides the name Kennedy. Let's get rid of these family 'entitlements'.

Caroline is not at all qualified and she is running only on tthe Kennedy name. Now we all know why her and uncle Teddie were stumping for Obama. They had other things in mind. It is time to rid the government of Kennedys so let's not put another one in. I fear the Giovernor of New York does not dare to reject her.

She is not qualfied, has no plan or any ideas she can express. Sorry, but being a Kennedy is not a quality that should get her an appointment.

Yeah, you can't say she is a bad candidate because of saying 'you know' too many times, she didn't want to speak at the beggining showing she isnt ready to talk to the public but that doesnt prove she cant do good, then again the ability to not speak to the public easily might just cause her the loss

Are you crazy or what? Her only marketable attribute is her last name, and let me tell you, there are plenty of people in this country who are not awed in the least bit by the Kennedy name. There are a lot of people who remember Senator Ted Kennedy and the young lady he left to die in a terrible car crash in his distant pass. I would rather see the seat go unfilled than see it given over to the Kennedys.

We need to end the careers of all the DemoRats and RepubliKans. This country is in the dumps because of the two party system. Vote every incumbent out and put in "statesmen" rather than "politicians". I'm always amused that the media is so biased towards lawyers being the only ones qualified for public service. We need a dose of the "common man" in Washington.

Oh good grief, let Caroline have the senate seat, she's as qualified as Hillary was when she was elected. After all what office had Hillary ever held or what had she ever done besides "stand by her man". That senate seat was her payoff for looking the other way all those years when ole BJ I mean Billary finally got caught red handed or red faced, or maybe red nosed? I guess it depends on what the meaning of is, is? Whatever... give Caroline that seat, she's persevered and after all we need another Kennedy in the senate, duh...

There's far more qualified individuals to fill this senate seat. I admire Coroline as a person, but to be appointed Senator, I don't think so.

Wow, reading the comments on here is disappointing, to say the least. You all are viewing the Kennedy surname as a reason as to not have her in office... Saying that we don't need another Kennedy, especially because of her "drunken uncle". Do you realize how hypocritical that argument is? You want to base her on her accomplishments, while you're ranting about her drunken uncle and the rest of her family? Some of these comments are downright hateful and ignorant. Give her a break; She could be a great leader for the New York people, and she could do a lot of good. Just because she said "You know" 3 times doesn't decline her application for the seat.

People need to keep speaking out. It did alot for Obama. It won't be long when we will have a woman as president and if Caroline gets to the senate my bet is that she will eventually make a run for the white house to follow in her daddy's footsteps and we don't need another Kennedy in amy type of office.

The timing seems wrong for another old-school patronage senate appointment for Caroline. Voters expect thoughtfulness in government and Gov Patterson would embarrass himself if he gave her this job, for which she is clearly unqualified.
