Ever since president-elect Obama mentioned that his kids are getting a puppy, dog lovers around the world have been panting with anticipation to learn what kind of dog will become first pup.

Obama, who described the decision as a "major issue," is on the hunt for an allergy-free dog, since daughter Malia is allergic. Seeing that Obama is the first "global president," it's not surprising that the Fido frenzy has gone international.

Peru has suggested its native Peruvian hairless dog, a bald, toothless breed, which actually looks cuter than it sounds. (You can get better acquainted with the breed here.) The country even has a specific dog in mind. Nicknamed "Ears," the four-month-old has been offered formally to the future first family in a letter sent to the U.S. Embassy. If the Obama girls reject the Peruvian pup, we hope it won't create an international incident.

But if the Obamas want to go American, there are plenty of allergy-free dogs to choose from. In fact, Yahoo! searches on "list of hypoallergenic dogs" surged over 3,000% as the curious researched on their own. Lookups on "goldendoodle," another low-allergy breed, increased 200%, as well as searches on "obama goldendoodle" and "goldendoodle rescue." As Obama mentioned himself, the family's preference is to adopt a dog from a shelter. A shelter dog would likely be, as he joked, "a mutt, like me."

It may be the first difficult choice of his presidency. But at least this decision will come with unconditional love.

A toy chocolate poodle would be perfect.

I think a "Mexican Hairless" or a "Chinese Crested" would be perfect, and be 'diplomatic' too!

Obama family should accept this wonderful gift as it is a win-win situation all around. Perfect dog for Obama children beacause it is hairless, hypallergenic and coincidentally has big ears. Would also go to help global relations and goodwill as well Barack.

The Presidential family should set an example for the rest of the nation to follow- adopt a shelter dog, or two! The greatest dogs I have every had are the three dogs we have from either the pound puppies or the rescued dogs. They could really help boost adaptions from shelters/pounds/rescue kennels by the publicity it could generate for adoptions of these animals that deserve a chance and good home. thanks for listening

I agree with adopting a dog from a shelter or rescue. I ran a rescue for pure bred throw aways for 5 years. People don't realize how many dogs, even expensive pure bred ones, are tossed out every year by their owners. Rather than get a pure bred puppy from a breeder try getting one from a shelter or rescue, there are tons available. Save a pup who truly needs a great loving family.

This is pathetic. This is the way I knew Obama's presidency would turn out. Picking out a freaking dog is an "important issue", are you serious!!! This guy is better fit being a celebrity not a president.

I don't think they should REPRESENT like Mrs. henderson said. It doesn't matter black or white dog or brown. Let them choose. A real smart dog is a border collie, but they can't handle the hair. My daughter is allergic and we have a border collie. Smartest dog on god's green earth. Stop making this a black/white thing cause its not. Mrs. H

Why would we want one of those ugly hairless dogs to be the "First Dog?" How about a real dog like the Goldendoodle or a very similar dog, the wheaten terrier. Both are hypoallergenic and they look like real dogs. Dogs are not supposed to be hairless. Hairless dogs look more like chernobyl survivors than dogs. And a toothless/hairless dog? What kind of dog is that?

Why not an AMERICAN Hairless Terrier. Great healthy dog. No teeth/nail issues of other hairless breeds. I'm not knocking the other breeds, they are beautiful....but hey, the breed was bred right here in America and it's origins ARE America.
