A Banner Year For Recalls

Thomas the Tank Engine wanted to see the world, but he didn't count on a poisonous paint job after his trip to China.
A recall of wooden Thomas toys has joined what is shaping up as a banner year for recalls. The toy recall doesn't measure up to the buzz brouhaha over the tainted pet food, although searches for "thomas the train recall" reached the top 4,000 this week, propelled largely by concerned parents.
Thomas's recall notice took the buzz load off the recall of 5.7 million pounds of possibly contaminated Tyson ground beef announced earlier in the week. Here's a look at what's making our skin crawl, eyes itch, and stomachs gurgle this week in searches...
The double listing of dental hygiene isn't a duplicate. China, already fingered as the manufacturing culprit in the toy train wreck and pet food debacle, released a toothpaste concoction that includes a chemical found in antifreeze.
However, China can't take the blame for all bad producs out there. The Colgate recall refers to fakes made in South Africa, while the ground beef comes from good ol' American cows, and the E. coli from good ol' American soil.
