We gave up collecting comic books years ago—not enough allowance and not enough patience to keep up with crossover issues, costume changes, and the spontaneous ressurections of dead heroes and villains. But we still line up for Free Comic Book Day, which pops up every first Saturday in May.

As much as they're disparaged by the cool crowd (save for the snobby graphic novel), comics have done a lot for our literacy, day dreams, and rainy days on the couch, not to mention big-budget summer blockbusters.
