"Survivor" is the granddaddy of reality TV, but its latest casting ploy reeks of ratings desperation.

This coming season, for the first time, "Survivor" will divide its "tribes" by ethnicity—Hispanic, Caucasian, African-American, and Asian-American. Whether this turns out to be "good TV" or sets back race relations remains to be seen. What can't be denied is the effect the announcement had on Search. Interest in "Survivor: Cook Islands" immediately jumped an astounding 1,147%.

But at what cost buzz? Many suspect the gimmick will alienate viewers. NYC city officials are already calling for the show to be pulled from the schedule.  And, if the season's a success, what tasteless tactic will they resort to next time? Cops vs. convicts? Catholics vs. Protestants? Bald men vs. Wookies? Hey, whatever it takes to top "Idol."
