Need further proof that the UFC has pinned the competition when it comes to bare-knuckle buzz? After UFC 59 took place this weekend, searches on "ultimate fighting" doubled, and the term KO'ed all other sports queries. Obviously, the popularity of mixed martial arts is no longer in question.
Searches on new heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia jumped from zero into the thousands after he defeated title holder Andrei Arlovski. Queries on Arlovski jumped 45%, and searches on the other titans of the octagon, including Matt Hughes, Rich Franklin, Tito Ortiz, and Chuck Liddell, spiked.
Following the UFC's first foray into California for a sanctioned card, a number of other queries caused the buzz to tap out. We were decked by "ufc results," clobbered by "ufc fighting video clips," elbowed by "mma," kicked in the head by "the ultimate fighter," and finally taken into submission by "royce gracie." What does the UFC have planned for their next pay-per-view extravaganza? Fans searching on "ufc 60" are already curious.
