Madden overcharged gamers by up to $925 million, says economist

Are you a fan of EA's epic Madden series? You -- and gamers like you -- could have been bilked out of almost a billion dollars, according to a Michigan professor of economics. » Full Story on Yahoo! Games Plugged In

"eradicate competing football video games ... and then hiked Madden prices to their current $60."

Are you Serious? Mike Smith should be demoted to assistant fluffer. When was the last time you bought a video game for 360 or PS3. GUESS HOW MUCH GAMES COST????? Incompetent jackA$$. The market prices are not set by the companies that make the games, unless it includes peripherals which madden does not. Madden is fun for the millions of people that are plenty willing to pay 60 bucks each year.

I have to agree with the Michigan professor. The last great football game produced was NFL2K5, which was sold for $20 and was vastly superior (to even the current game Madden 09). The NFL thought that this low price cheapened the NFL brand and in the following year agree to an exclusive deal with EA Sports. EA essentially bought the licensing rights even though they had an inferior product. That's why EA is called the Evil Empire...

Then they shouldn't buy the game! You shouldn't be suing EA because consumers bought a $60 game! It's not like EA forced them to!

FACT: When you have no competition, you no longer have to maintain quality.
FALSE: People will not mind when you destroy other BETTER franchises.

"bilked out of almost a billion dollars", I don't know that I have been bilked out of anything. I payed for a product I enjoy and I don't mind paying the $60.00. It's worth it. Sounds like the fallen competitors are just crying because their product failed and is inadequate compared to EA.

OK, though I think $60 is steep for a video game (and yes Im still gonna pay to play) it isn't 'need' in life but a 'want'. It's not gas, nor water nor food or electricity. To think someone would actually sue because of the price is crazy..must have been thought of in Cali...

Get MLB involved as well. We havent been able to get a decent baseball game since MVP 05 because of a similar deal..

How did they "hike" up Madden prices to $60. I don't know about X-Box 360 games, but pretty much ALL PS3 games are $60 when released last time I checked.

It's honestly about time someone justified, or quantified, the fact that EA has monopolized stronghold over sports games. The NFL has honestly deprived us great football games for the last 5 years. Now I do believe that this year's Madden will be quitew nice, but why did we have to wait so long?

It doesn't matter. If everybody paid the $60 and enjoyed the game then the game IS worth $60. Period. Good for EA Sports for being so savy. That Michigan professor is just an idiot.

Well it doesn't surprise me that EA Sports is doing that, because I went to the store to pick up my reserved copy of BCFX and the games release was pushed back to the 29th of August. The reason it was pushed back is because, EA Sports paid Microsoft to do that so that EA Sports coulld have that release date and a week for them selves. Isn't illegal to have a conglomorate like that to have everything locked up so that the small company can't make any?

The early Madden's were OK...but the NFL2K series was just as fun...even the $19.99 one that was done with ESPN with T.O. on the cover...I hate the Madden series and all it stands for and that's why even as avid a football fan and video gamer I will never buy another Madden...paying 60 bucks to update rosters my ass.

About damned due time that someone take on this money-milking- poket-empyting-mega-money-sucker known as Madden/EA Sports franchise!! Yes, I admit I like to play Madden BUT, kinda hard to play "something else" when Madden became the ONLY NFL game you could play (yes, there was also the NFL "Head Coach," truth be told; I never played "Head Coach")! Didn't "look" like you controled the players on "Head Coach" eigther, someone please correct me if Iam wrong. One thing I won't be told Iam wrong on is the fact that the "2K" Franchises had the best graphics over Madden there for awhile and when/if "2K" come back; I guaruntee they will still have the best graphics over Madden!! I was truely and utterly pissed when "EA" bullied the "2K" Franchise out of competition (and it was because "2K" WAS COMPETITION

Um.....isn't just about every PS3/360 game $60 at launch? How is that hiking up prices when it costs the same as everything else.
