Although Temple Square is in downtown Salt Lake, it is private property and the guards have the right to ask people to leave for any reason. You can require our government to authorize gay marriage (which they don't), and create a social standard that allows anyone to anything, anywhere they want, and force parents to introduce discussions about sex at a much earlier age because the culture of open acceptance no matter what. But you can't force a religious organization to allow acts, it feels are inappropriate, on it's private property.
Before everyone starts writing hateful prejudice remarks about the Mormon Church please realize that in the United States of America everyone is entitles to their personal religious beliefs. For the LDS church one of those beliefs is that homosexuality is immoral. If those two men want to kiss that is fine but they should do it on public property or in the privacy of their home and show some respect for the beliefs of others.

If I don't want a certain type of behavier on my property and ask the person to leave and they don't I have every right to have them arrested. I would have to agree with what others have said. I am farrrrrr from a member or fan of the mormon church, but it is private property. Just as any other church location generally is. And, according to the article, it only got bad with the police once they became "argumentative" when asked to stop or take their act elsewhere, very similar to a drunk being asked to leave a bar and becoming argumentative outside.

If you don't believe me, spend some time on Castro Street in San Francisco. It was not that long ago that such behaviour was a criminal offense, with good reason.
Public displays of affection such as kissing and having sex, are not allowed on Mormon church property. It IS NOT public property, which is what the gay couple was arguing about. They were rude, obnoxious, cursing up a storm, using the "F" word, and making threats. The police had every right to arrest them. Just because you are gay does not mean you have a different set of laws, even if you think you are "special". BTW I'm a Catholic (NOT a Mormon).They were making a public spectacle of themselves and creating this huge scene in the hopes that they could start a confrontation and then sue the church. All they had to do was to simply walk away (not more than 30 yards) and they would have been on public property. Are we to be forced to accept their inappropriate behavior, anytime, anywhere? What next? Anal sex on the Church grounds? Why not? They are "special" aren't they?
When you go to a place that is "private property", and you engage in conduct that you know will cause friction with the owner... then you are purposely instigating trouble. You are an agitator. They were handcuffed for refusing to leave private property when requested to do so (this is called trespassing), for cursing at police, for resisting arrent, for creating a public nuisance, etc. It had nothing to do with being gay.

What can one say about a church which was founded by a town troublemaker (Joseph Smith's kind used to be called juvenile delinquents) who founded a religious cult based on a racist story which was part of a work of fiction (written by some fellow in Ohio) and then tranformed the thing into a supposedly holy scripture? He also adopted and warped some rituals from the Free Masons while he was about it. It is what it is despite the good PR they buy. That entity has its own moral and ethical issues and ought not cause difficulties for gay people nor anyone else.
A law suit might be in order. Once a plaza, mall or anything else is opened to the general public, reasonable affectionate behavior is not subject to control by the owners of the property.

Hmm, something tells me that if I owned a plaza, opened it up for "public use" then detained a couple for praying publicly.. the citizens would want to lynch me.
