The organic producers of crops are actually helping to spread the disease by not spraying a fungicide that will greatly reduce the spread of this blight. Blight is a very serious problem in every field crop. It can literally wipe out a crop overnight. Some air born plant pathogens have no cure, but most do. Failing to take the necessary steps to slow the spread of the disease spells higher food prices and a reduced crop yield.
People should stop worrying about controlling nature. Let God do his work and let's praise him.

We raised our tomatoes from seed. No symptoms of late blight here but I am looking out for early blight and gray mold, frequent pathogens.
I would rather pay more for tomatoes and other products than eat things covered in fungicide. Chemicals are never the answer. Go organic or go Home.
Now all the Irish Americans will have to migrate elsewhere I suppose. Do they have the blight in Mexico?

If the Food Safety Bill passes, the Federal government will have the power to condemn & destroy any & all crop production. So those of us who choose some measure of autonomy now will face Federal criminal penatlies for raising potatoes or strawberries or whatever in our backyards. Eventually, this Irish fungus causes the plant to go straight to the pub after work, drink whiskey until 3 a.m. and go home and throw its wife down the stairs.
Here where I live in the Rocky Mountain west my tomato plants got something and died. Maybe it was the fungus as I purchased my plants at WalMart to start with.
A "natural" fungicide is sulphur. Powdered or flowers of sulphur is an old home remedy for molds, ringworm, etc. Sprinkle it on yr garden. It kills mold. People talking gainst chemicals have no knowledge of science. Chemicals are a part of nature. Vinegar is acetic acid. Soak yr feet in it to kell athlete's foot. Maybe spray yr garden with white vinegar solution, experiment , to kill molds.

I just came in from the garden and the tomato plants look lush and healthy. Picked a mess of green beans as well. Earlier this morning we were at a Farmers' Market and chatted with a grower. He said he produces 20 kinds of heritage tomatoes and is concerned because a neighbor's potato field has late blight.
Seems as politics in these discussions is as infectious as late blight and just as opportunistic.
