100 billion is no small change...more than the bailout of AIG or GM. I hate paying taxes as much as the next guy and do everything legally I can to minimize them. But hiding your assests is clearly illegal and the Swiss have been helping people do that since WWII. If they can't abide by our laws here, then the bank should be closed down..I am sure they would do the same to us. Who do the fines benefit?

I see no excuse for allowing USB and other similar institutions to skirt US tax laws. If US citizens feel they need to hide their money, perhaps they should not be US citizens. Let them take their dirty money and live elsewhere - we don't need them here.
Not everybody with money in a Swiss Account or Caymen account is a tax evader and its wrong to assume they all are, Some people hide money for other reasons, Maybe they married a spouse that they may feel married them for money??? Maybe They have family that would kill to get a hold of their money if they knew how much they had. Maybe you want to protect your money from all of the rediculous estate fights upon your death so that only the person you want to have it will know where its at. Not everyone got thier money and evaded taxes and its wrong to assume so. If you have dual citizenship, you should not have to worry about this either. Big Government was not what out country was founded on. Why cant we audit the fed, they control all of our money but they sure aren't allowing the tax payers to know what they do with it all! Well once again the American Government flexing it's muscles into a foriegn countries affairs. The only reason the IRS want the names of the account holders is so they can take hold of free money and allow the government to continue there wasteful unchecked spending. The dollar is worth less then .66 cents now and falling fast thanks to the Fed Reserve liberal policies.
When there is conflict between Swiss laws and local US laws, UBS should be required to adhered to the local laws since it is conducting business in the US. If UBS and the Swiss gov't. fail to comply, I hope the court / US Gov't will ban UBS from conducting wealth management business in the US. The same set of rules should govern all firms conducting business in the U.S., whether a US registered or foreign registered firm.
I see that no judicial decision has been made to date. Of course not, USB plans to give up "some" identities in exchange for a free pass on the multitude of other accounts they manage. I say the U.S. and the IRS should aggressively pursue criminal actions and sanctions against all parties involved. I am certain that the powers that be in the world banking community hold more sway than any government anywhere including the United States. Therefore I expect no changes whatsoever in "offshore" banking practices. The IRS will take what they are offered and the Federal Government will sit on their proverbial hands.
If this deal becomes a reality, Americans will be shocked by the amount of money held in these accounts by the tax evading wealthy in this country! I'm actually shocked by the number of non wealthy Right Wing people in this country who think they are doing themselves a favor by sticking up for these autocrates! They've been getting ripped off by these people for years, and LOVING IT!? AMAZING!
