NTSB blames downdrafts in Steve Fossett crash (AP)

AP - The aircrash that killed entrepreneur Steve Fossett, famed for his daredevil aerial feats, probably was caused by downdrafts that exceeded the ability of his small plane to recover before slamming into a California mountainside, federal safety officials said Thursday. » Full Story on Yahoo! News

Wow!! and it only took them almost 2 years to determine this? I mean I know it took forever to find the crash site, but they found it several months ago...

Who funded this investigation? Were those some of my tax dollars? Personally, I don't really care why his craft crashed. He was a cool dude, and he did risky s*** That's why his plane crashed. There, I could have saved our country millions. What a useless waste of money, as usual.

Excuse me? If it was downdrafts then it would be a "land crash", up drafts would have caused an air crash :)

Did Bush get the blame from the Democrats and Liberals for this yet?

It's Aerobatic not acrobatic, "small plane"? no, It's PRIVATE or GENEAL AVIATION as opposed to Commercial or Military. Writer could you please do a LITTLE research before reporting on something you obviously DON'T UNDERSTAND. (clinton raised , no doubt!)

Okay, this is probably something they didn't take into consideration.

Being as he was flying in California. If he was anywhere near San Francisco, it is very possible that there was a massive downdraft...I understand by those that are in the know, that at certain times of the day or evening, there can be sever downdrafts from all the f** in SF sucking at the same time.

I understand, it can happen quiet unexpectedly. The moon, the stars, and all of the queers have to be in alignment.

Just a thought....

Some wrong doing sounds like. He was too good of a flyer for this !

Unexpected downdraft caused by inertia created when opposite directional force unexpectedly issued from aft compartment of pilot. In other words FOSSETT FARTED.

While looking for a suitable place for a land speed record attempt, he apparently flew into weather conditions that were beyond the capabilities of his aircraft that resulted in the crash and his death. He lived his life pushing the envelope, which is what heroes of all walks of life choose to do. If there were no dangers involved, there would be no risks and no accomplishments. The dangers he faced were of his own choice, but were far less dangerous than the average Joe faces every day driving on the nations highways amongst the text messagers and the drunks.

He had a premonition that Obeyme would become president...so he headed for land at full speed.

I am sick of the lack of responsibility these days. That pilot flew into a thunderhead. It is the pilots fault first, not downdrafts. User error.

A lot of trash talking is going on here. Steve would be best remembered for his amazing life, and his daring feats that made front page news.
Sam Clemons, aka: Mark Twain experienced the Washoe Zephyr first hand, and so have many white knuckled fliers who have had the awful experience of dropping thousands of feet when caught in one of these infamous downdrafts.
So put your political agendas a side for a moment and remember the man for whom he really was.... a great adventurer with a zest for living life to the fullest.

It's very difficult for me to believe that aircraft couldn't climb faster than 400 fpm with only one person and no baggage on board, even at an altitude of 10,000 feet. That plane is rated for aerobatics! Something else has to be involved IMHO...

I'm not sure about anything with flight, but, if paperwork and i'm thinking a wallet or something, were found, from my readings before..how is it that the bones of this man have not been found? I understand a fire on impact, but how is it that no bones or anything remains except paperwork? This is after a year as well.

downdrafts and updrafts near mountains can definitely scare one beyond comprehension. it happened to me once in a single engine and has made me a better pilot but still makes me leary about flying in strong winds. the downdraft would have had to push him fast than 400 fpm.... my guess would be 1200-1500 fpm. i would be curious to know how close to the terrain he was flying before the serious gusts/downdrafts started.

This would make a passable insurance scam if this guy wasn't such a novice at flying and having shown lack of caution in life experiences. Oh Wait! hmmmmm?

Oh crap I see there are some of these people have no idea in hell about flying or the aerodynamics of it but they gotta make their mark and make a lame brained boneheaded statement.
No matter how good a pilot a man is there are always dangers that can take him out in a nanosecond.
