The ultimate freedom: choosing when to end your own life.
RIP.
(And they must have had a real sense of humor - did you see what their kids are named?)
RIP, YOU DID IT YOUR WAY! There is a lot of controversy over assisted suicide in the United States when there really should not be any at all.
I will not choose this way out although life is sometimes a difficult journey. Aging isn't easy and neither is illness but we must patiently wait for the end; it will come it always does.
if i had a choice of dying from cancer or dying from morphine i'd take the morphine.
We can never judge unless we have walked in someone else's shoes. They did not want the rest of their lives to be pain and suffering and a burden to the children. They did not want to live without each other. I think they were very brave...
I have no problem with people wanting to manage their pain before death. I just can not justify our "right" to choose when we die, I don't think that is up to us.
Lovin' you is easy cause you're beautiful. La la la la la, La la la la la, La la la la la, la la la la...........
this is sad but i believe if you want to end your life without the rigors of poor health this should be a legal option. there has to be a list of qualifications and no one but yourself can authorize it whether of sound mind or not. plus you have to be terminally ill.Unlike abortion where the fetus has no say and their life is ended because a mother doesn't want the child. that is wrong. A fetus with prediagnosed serious health deformities should be aborted if the parents agree. tough arguements and that's why these are issues this country has struggled with.
I support the right to die, but we must be very cautious as a society that the right to die does not become the obligation to die.
We kill in combat for ideals, we (humans) murder for seemingly senseless reasons, we take life into our own hands and end our own life at our own hand. One thing is for certain, we will all pass from what we know to be life in the flesh. What we don't know is how it will happen until is comes. Making a plan to hasten the inevitable is cunning, yet it only facilitates what will happen. Some relief from pain, a bitter-sweet release of knowing that we did not go further into the slide of health. Only God in heaven really has the final say so, but we like to think we can make this decision ourselves. Our ability to have control over life is a never-ending pursuit. Immortality is what we desire, but in the present world it is not a virtuous ideal. We need to live our lives to the fullest while we are here, blessing all that we can, as long as we can. If we no longer have breath left to do this, it is time to go home with our Creator. He will tell us when it is time.
Good for them!
We should all have the right to choose our own end. If I were in their position (and place), I would have done the same thing - and my husband agrees.
I'm not the first to say it, of course, but we don't let our pets suffer when they're diagnosed with some fatal illness or injury - we give them a shot and they die peacefully. That's considered "humane." And yet in our culture, if you have some hideous disease . . . you're just supposed to suffer until you die. Or be so doped up on morphine that you have no idea what's going on. Somehow that's "noble" (driven by religious sentiment, no doubt.)
It's ludicrous. Give me the shot and LET ME GO.
At least they're free and at peace now. Forever, they will be together.
Most of us do not know what a life of constant pain feels like. Those that do should have the option to choose not to suffer.
THESE ARE A COWARD PAIR!
First of all they were careless in taking care of their good health. Then when they contracted illness instead of facing it and fighting it they just wanted to end their own lives.
A SET OF UNCOUTH, UNGRATEFUL PERSONS WHO TOOK THEIR LIFE FOR GRANTED AND DID WHATEVER COULD WITH A PRECIOUS GIFT FROM GOD-LIFE.
That Sweden Clinic? They should be exterminated.THEY HAVE TAKEN THE NATURE'S LAW IN THEIR HANDS. BLOW THAT CLINIC OFF.
At age 85 he was going blind and losing his hearing, and this is abnormal? Taking a life no matter whose it is, is murder. If you are a believer in God you must understand that this is a sure way to hell. God forgives all sins but you need to be alive to ask for forgivness.
could have stayed in US and let the drunk Dante stallworth run over over him, once you are a murderer like dante whats another victim or two..another 24 days in jail
I'd tell them to drug me until it doesn't hurt anymore. If that kills me then it kills me but I'm not quiting.
"Brave and courageous"? It takes courage to continue to live when life gets rough. I have a close young friend who is going blind, has a wife and children, and he faces it cheerfully and with the attitude that his purpose here on earth hasn't been fulfilled yet, and he's not quitting. I've also personally known many people with serious cancer who never gave up, and continued to enjoy their loved ones in the time allotted them. Guess it depends on what you are living for, huh?
It's a slippery slope from assisted suicide to euthanasia for the greater good of society.
i am glad they made this decision on their own rather than have right wing meddling christians getting involved. if you ever want to prolong suffering, just ask a christian to get involved in your life.
The reason America does not allow things like this is the loss in money to the medical industry would be devastating. Hospital , nursing, pharmacy, and related areas but be wrecked. GREED!
I am sorry but this story bothers me greatly. Aging is not easy nor is disease but going into a clinic to kill yourself is just wrong. It is not how God intended you to go. I hope to God we never allow for such a clinic in the USA - of course, with the direction of the USA these days it would not surprise me. Nothing surprises me anympre under the Obama administration.
Hope we ,in America, will have this choice available . If we can let horses and dogs and cats put out of their mysery..why can't a human be allowed?
Rest in Peace
Dave O: Exactly. When this article fails to mention is the situation in Switzerland has become a nightmare for aging parents who are in nursing homes and are in constant fear their children will have them 'put to sleep' as they would a family pet! All the kids need to do is sign papers saying their parents are 'unfit to make decisions for themselves' and that is that. The elderly are afraid to drink their orange juice! As for killing ones self, as I recall it is still forbidden by the church and considered the direct route to Hades. Give me the drugs I need so I don't know who I am, but don't you dare kill me! God has His plan and each person is allotted their share of days' as awful as they may become.
GOOD FOR THEM!! Why is it that when a family pet is diagnosed witha serious illness, we can choose to lovingly 'put them to sleep' yet we as a society make human being suffer?????? Why can't we have a choice as well? When both of my parents were terminally ill with CA, how much more HUMANE would it have been if we could give them a pill, kiss them lovingly goodbye and let them go in peace. NOPE, much better from them to suffer endless tests and painful CA and chemo than to go peacefully! I hope we can see this in my lifetime come to fruition.
Who are we to judge what's right and what's wrong? These two lived long, accomplished lives. They have children to carry on their legacy. Instead being a burden on anyone, they made a choice. Do not pass judgement until you have been exactly where they have been. I hope they both found what they were looking for.
Reminds me of that old song.... We can die if you want to, we can leave our friends behind....
