Can someone please tell me why this hippo was killed!? NOW they are discussing relocation? They finally escape captivity with a drug lord and start a family in the wild, and then we intervene by shooting one and hunting the other down, deciding only after public outcry to allow the hunt to end without death?! What if animal-abusing humans used the basic logic of "Hmm...Would I want this done to me?" and were sentenced to the same treatment if they fail to use that logic and instead opt for brutalizing an animal. By the way, JimJ, your comment- though staggeringly witty and hilarious- makes me wonder how you would feel if in a foreign country just having escaped your captor only to be murdered by those who should have been protecting you, leaving your wife and new baby to fend for themselves. But NO, these are only hippos we’re talking about here. Animals don’t have feelings after all, do they? This story has left me pissed and I am so sick of reading about animal abuse.

I'm glad they've decided to call the hunt off and instead relocate Matilda... They should've done that beforehand, but at least one of them and the calf are still going to live.

Agree 100%, Resident32. Except, contrary to the media and the mainstream's pop-culture terminology, it isn't "animal abuse", it's pre-meditated murder. And it should be prosecuted as such.

The Ministry of Environment in Columbia could think of absolutely nothing better to do then shoot these hippos? Says a lot for the intelligence of that country. I'm glad experts will help save Matilda and the baby. I hope all the other hippos and exotic animals are saved from the god awful zoos in that country. They'll either starve, or end up in a canned hunt for some other rich drug dealer so they put the head on their wall. South America is notorious for looking the other way in the illegal wild life trade which is also run by drug cartels.

What happened? It resurfaced in his Tampa office or Yankee Stadium?

why not send the remaining hippos to Michael Jackson's Neverland??May be there's some provision for that. It's just so sad that a government could take such a drastic measure against animals..

It never ceases to amaze me how sadistic humans are to their fellow animals, just because they have the power, and how they can even joke about the cruelty. I certainly hope the remaining hippos are sent to a sanctuary and not a zoo, which is basically a prison for life for animals who haven't committed any crime.

a perfect example on why some endangered species should be relocated. instead of shooting the hyppo. the governenment should have embrased the new speices in the wild but managed it's numbers. it would have been a buffer in case of a decline of the species in africa.
