I don't know about the volunteer crap, but the 4 day work week @ 10 hours per day is OK by me! I don't believe it. Those pesky Mormons messed around and did something right for a change! This should be the new, adjusted standard. Nobody is paying overtime anymore and this is a much better way to milk the straight time. I currently work 12 hour nights, 3 nights per week, so I could do the 10 hour shift standing on my head. Just think, a 3 day week end every week. Another deal that should be done is to pay EVERYONE once a week, on Friday. Doctors, blue collar, everyone. 1 bow to Maroni for this intelligent decision from people whom I usually don't care much for.
You're going to have trouble finding a job where you can stand around on your head.
Volunteering is exactly the wrong approach to take in today's shaky economy. Also, more could be done for fellow humans by asking to work four 8-hour days rather than 10-hour ones. This would result in more paychecks for others. Not doing volunteer work would also result in more young people being able to find employment. Toiling for free may result in the loss of a job for someone in need. This is not charitable..........This is welfare in reverse......All productivity deserves compensation. Ask the CEO's who benefit from volunteerism. They know all about compensation.........THEY won't work for free!
What a nice report.
Just one question...if I had to do business with the state of Utah on a Friday, is it impossible now? Because it doesn't sound like they flexed the 4 day work week, it sounds like they just close doors on Thursday night.
By the way, the feds have had a flex schedule for years including a 4-10 schedule. It never bothered me because Federal employees work about 5 hours a week anyway and get contractors to do the real work. So it really didn't matter whether they were at their jobs or not. I wonder if Utah does the same thing?
This is cool.
Now, spend your Friday's working on a replacement for the worst President ever...find someone, make someone up...who cares!
Thanks Utah people!
Not surprised. Utah happens to be one of the few states where many if its residents are still grounded in their faith. Is there any correlation to the cynicism we're experiencing as a nation now to the assault we've seen on religious life and the increasing secularism of the last 40 years? I think so.
Here is another effect of the 4 day work week. Utah's population is going to increase. All the Poligies are going to be making babies at an alarming rate. in ten years Utah will be the most populous state. There needs to be a lot of adventurous young boys and girls need to miagrate to Utah. Come on out we need you.
huey left a good comment and I agree to a degree. The work week should have been changed to 30 hours years ago. when the jobless rate went up and the first oil crisis occurred. This way millions of jobs would have been created and more time would be spent with children at home being raised by T.V. and playstation. by my calculation the unemployment rate would be so low that immigration reform would be so that we expedite legal immigrants so that the jobs could be filled and we could collect taxes on the new workforce. We create more problems then we solve but running a country is not that DAM hard. Nuke who needs Nuking and Nudge who need Nudging. That is a joke!!!
Bottom line is if you ran the numbers our society would change drasticly in less then one decade.
Hey why doesnt the media report about the new trend in workplace solutions. Its called the "0" day workweek that has taken the country by storm.Corporate America doesnt get enough credit on this one and neither do our political leader/global economy theorists.Lets tip our caps and ask these groups to take a bow for once again making our lives easier and streamlining our day to day tasks.
I have worked every possible shift there is to work and I can tell you that 4 10's with every Friday off is the best I've ever had. I sure as heck would not complain if I ever had to go back to that schedule again. Acutally, 2 weeks we had off Fridays, then 2 weeks we had off Mondays. It was sweet.
Latter-day Saints do not pay their leaders at any level. We do pay for services such as IT, church level financial audits, and so forth. Tithing is for temples, facilities maintenance, new meetinghouses, and so forth.
Even the government uses volunteers, especially at VA hospitals, among other departments.
According to Independent Sector, the average value of volunteer work is $16.74 per hour. Non-profit organizations depend on donations, gifts-in-kind and volunteer service to make a difference in their communities.
According to the IS website, 83.9 million American adults volunteer, representing the equivalent of over 9 million full-time employees at a value of $239 billion. That is not chump change and makes a big difference to MANY non-profits.
In California, they work five 8-10 hour days a week -- and sometimes weekends -- and still manage to have tens of thousands of volunteers too. Yet they are now BANKRUPT!! Utah, on the other hand, now how a four 10-hour days a week schedule, has increased volunteerism, and is having a booming economy despite the bungled policies of THIS new administration. Mmmmm... I wonder why? What could be different between California and Utah? Could it be its leadership? Let's check each politician and see what letter comes after their name -- D or R -- then lets check to see how well their State is doing!! Utah is demonstrating the basic fundamentals of FEDERALISM (look it up) where States can experiment with different ideas. Utah's experiment with work weeks and tax reduction is working. California's experiment on oppressive regulation and raising taxes has bankrupted them. I wonder which experiment other States will follow? Go Utah! ;)
The government tries to cut the carbon footprint by giving the people an extra day off and they go out running around volunteering... Think this really cuts out any carbon? Nope... just more "carbon hype" in my view...
Gov. Granholm of Michigan.. ARE YOU LISTENING? And Calif. could take a hint on how to save money too...
Great idea - a better quality of life for everybody. And if they don't volunteer they can always send out The Avenging Angels to make sure they do. Ride on Porter Rockwell.
Good for Utah, but why did they think a 4 day work week would cut energy use, if you are in the office 40 hrs a week it really doesn't matter if it's over 4 days or 5, 40 hrs is 40 hrs!!!!!!!
Mormons are usually good people. Most of them have strong personal beliefs, and live by them. The works they volunteer to do, like caring for homeless pets, show their basic kindness. Others may not follow, but you have shown the way. Thanks, Utah.
I think a 4 day work week is great, however, in the article it states about reducing carbon emmisions because of this action. I assume those who volunteer are getting to their destination via a vehicle. Where is the carbon emmisions savings ? Politicians and a lot of people in this country think that by killing the industry in this country who have some of the srtictest pollution guidelines in the world, and putting thousands of people out of work. Then having the third world countries build plants to produce the same materials, and they have NO polution control, and let it all fly into the atmosphere ? Duh, isn't the atmosphere all in one. Want to save the earth. Park the cars, trucks, buses. The government and oil companies don't want to say that though. Anyway, a 4 day work week sounds great, but I agree, let them work 4 - 8 hour days, and put some other people to work.
walk your stupid dog and work for free........idiot lay backs who hate factories and bought foreign cars have distroyed this country and i hope you all lose the rest of what jobs are left. ...............
I work 4-10's and it is good for the soul. You have more time to "smell the roses" and rest if you want. Remember about California now, they have a law that if you work over 8 hours in a "day" you get overtime. Not just over 40 in a week. Thus, California would be paying overtime in a 4-10 situation. This is where government policy screws them up. It is a nightmare for employers and another reason business's are leaving Cali.
Yeah great. Of course, when you work for the government you can abandon your service responsibilities on Fridays. How do you think it feels for your customers when you tell them "but 4x10 is the same as 5x8 !" the only day in the week they may have a remote chance getting in touch with you during your "working hours"?
I already work 12-14 hours during the week and I will support you if you work your modest 10 hours from 6am-noon and 6pm-10pm, including Fridays. Maybe then I can see you in your chambers at a time that does not force me to abandon my responsibilities to my customers at the same time.
And you can do all your volunteering in the afternoons if you fancy that. Every day.
just how in the hell are all you yuppies gonna keep and pay for your "stuff" on 30 or 32 hours a week ?? and you "assume" that because the work week was cut that there would be constructive adjustments made ?? it is the INDIVIDUALS who decide on volunteerism, NOT the "leaders" (and I use that term loosely)
INTEL, from the very beginning, proved that 4-10's was more profitable due to increased productivity PLUS something today's corporate bosses could care less about, the employees LOVE it ! Actually, now that I think about it Intel had them on a 4-10 / 3-12 schedule and they made more money than all the other companies hands down - What is wrong with being closed on Fridays ?? you can't do "business" on a Friday ? so what, VOLUNTEER or SPEND TIME WITH THE FAMILY !! TEACH YOUR KIDS SOMETHING !!!
Hey Maria, what denomination do you belong to ? I am not Mormon but I see one glaring difference that we ALL should take note of, they run the church like a BUSINESS and they LOOK OUT FOR ONE ANOTHER !! anyone else doin' that ??
unhappy, I might assume the reduces carbon emissions, or at least a portion of that, comes from using no or much less electricity, etc ... at the workplace - furthermore, on Friday's, at least in the good weather
