The biggest problem for the republicans in confirming Sotomeyer is that A) she is a woman, and B) she isnt white. Both of these throw the old white boys network into a deep decline. The strong smart women that are now, and have been in the past, on the Supreme Court are capable, smart and ground breakers. One more in the mix should be fascinating.

I wonder why americans are so racists, we are all the same regardless of race, creed and color...
The US Constitution call us " WE THE PEOPLE"
that mean we are all the people not just black or white or hispanic.. we citizens of the USA have to learn to accept that this blessed country was founded on the principles that we are all equal.
Now should we ask that we get rid of all the different etnic background should be discriminated,
eradicated from this GREAT NATION???
Please ladies and gentleman you need to get it and I am a citizen of the USA and proud of it just because I believe that all man where created equal and womens too..

Where would anyone find a wise Latina?

Whoever wrote this article is so "one sided" -- that they're even afraid to give their name. If a white guy said he would make a better judge because of his background than a Latina woman -- he would be certainly be called a "racist".

Question is... did she just make a stupid comment or does she really think that. Either way not impressive behavior for someone who is supposed to be "brilliant".

I find it funny that now that there is a black man as President and soon to be a Hispanic woman on the Supreme Court, that “race” is such an issue with white people, not all but a good number of people in high places are scared. You see all these so called Americans crawling out from under their rocks, pointing fingers when for the past 232 years it’s been good as long as they (white men) were the ones controlling the strings. Race has always been an issue, just white people never cared before.

Doesn't she remind you of the old lady who played in, "Throw Mamma From the Train", or the gross mother from, "The Goonies"...??!!

She probably does hate white people. Her face looks like it was chewed on by an alligator or something when she was young. Ugh. She probably hates men, whites and anybody who is better looking than her.

"When has a Latina been in a position to hurt white men?" After Sotomayor unconstitutional ruling AGAINST firefighters BECAUSE they were WHITE... Hmm... I think the "reporter" needs to look up the facts BEFORE asking retorical questions that don't make his point.

What such a cheerleading article! This is what passes for journalism these days. Sucks big time. How about saying that racist remarks and viewpoints are wrong by anyone.

Look at you racist idiots whining about that comment. It was nothing more than the comment Limbaugh made a few years back when he worked for ESPN and bought up Dovovan McNab's race about why he was perceived as a good quarterback. Foooools like you defended Limbaugh's comment as not being racist. Well Sotomayor's comment is no different. Funny how now some whites are sensitive to race comments. Like you jerks like to say when blacks speak of racism and slavery, GET OVER IT!!!!!

She's a racist and cannot interpret the laws as they are written. That's why over half of her rulings have been struct down! She's not a wise Latina, just a smart-assed one.

The problem lies in the fact that's she is being vetted for the highest court in the land, a position in which she has to be impartial, no matter what her background or ethnicity. It's a far cry from being a manager in corporate America. And how soon we forget how the Democrats wanted nothing to do with Bush's Latino candidate for the same office. Seems it's only racism when it's a Republican asking.
Personally, I lived in a primarily Latino community in Los Angeles for over 20 years and I don't really differentiate between the races, however Sotomeyer does and she's trying to be approved for what should be the most unbiased position in the land. It does make a difference.

"Sotomayor’s opponents are essentially saying she would be unfair to white men."

What?? This is misinformation. Sotomayor's opponents are saying her comments indicate her willingness to allow personal prejudices, rather than original intent, to influence her judicial decisions. This is a very serious accusation. It is wrong in principle, regardless of the color of the judge doing it. What if a White man made the same comments: “I would hope that a wise [White man] with the richness of [his] experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a [Latina woman] who hasn’t lived that life.” He would never be under serious consideration for this office because of his obvious prejudice.

This is not a contest between Latina women and White men. It is a matter of grave concern over a lifetime appointment to the highest court in the land. Shame on you, Michael Giarrusso, AP regional news director, for spewing such baloney. You do us all a disservice.

I'd like to see a white male try running for a similair position in Mexico using the same arguments:

When in Mexican history has a caucasian male been in a position to oppress the most powerful group in the nation?

what a load of cheerleading tripe!

Again the Ap has its head up its you know what. I think the story is one sided and shows total ignorance about America. Yes we want one language we want the American culture which is made up of many others with the understanding that because you can do something in your contry does not mean you can do it here. I lived in Europe for three years and I guess the Europeans are racists. I have to learn French because that was the native language. FOr some reason the entire population would not learn English. I had to obey thier laws not the laws of the U.S A. See how racists they are. Get a life and try and get to be an American with American values, Speak English and follw our laws.

First if we are the people then drop the Spanish-American, Asian-American and African American and just be American! People always want to come to America for a better life but I can honestly say I never hear of people trying to leave or sneak out. I do not understand this if the white man is so awful. I guess the blacks want to turn America into another Africa, the Mexicans turn it into another corrupt ridden Mexico and the Chinese-Americans want another government controlled China. I the people can not be AMERICAN and forget what happened to the great-great-great grandparents then move back to the home land. It is funny how a land that is supposedly controlled by white men that people can have more rights than their so called home land. And why can the white man only be white and not German American or Irish American? And for D3, who is always throwing race out there for 232 years, not the white man. Who is on TV bringing up race the most?????

Bush killed the American dream and Obama is now in charge of resuscitating it...and he is doing a GREAT JOB thus far. The rate of unemployment has slowed, housing loses have slowed. There is opportunity for businesses to start hiring again now that the worst (BUSH) is behind us. The real question is how high will we go!

Ok people. I find it odd that the people justifying her comments are making racist remarks themselves. We are talking about equality for ALL under the law. It has been well documented how whites have discriminated minorities through the years.
It seems now the argument is , well now it is your turn. How many Latina women are on the Supreme Court?
That is not the issue. The issue will she rule fairly for ALL people.
YOU DO NOT END DISCRIMINATION WITH DISCRIMINATION -- that is the point.

It does not matter who did what when many years ago, we are talking today, 2009 and EVERYONE having the same OPPORTUNITY.

Ah... racist crap from racist jerks. Diversity is just another word for my race is better than your race. I'm sick of it. Toss skin color in the garbage bag. I never want to hear about a Latina being put in this position or a black man getting that position.

Beyond racism! BEYOND!

The problem with all this subject is that there is no real talk of racism because the one who has said racist comments isn't a so called white even though her color of skin is white and the prescription that all white people are racist is a lie that all others that isn't white or some political points to be made if they are white never want to admit that there is and always will be people who are racist. Yes against white, no reverse to it, plan old racism. So who made these rules of law that calls whites( not their ethnic blood lines but a color). Color coating American people how racist is that and this has come from the experienced law professionals.

All she wants to do is abolish the death penalty, take away our guns and vote against the written constitution. That and that alone is why I dont like her.Who cares that she is a Latina Woman? She should be drilled on her open disagreement with our founding fathers and not be let into this highly coveted position.

So let me get this straight: anyone who identifies with a particular ethnicity is too controversial for politics! That leaves the straight, white male, who's too upset to alarm anyone (except when they're discriminating against everyone else).
