10 Failed Doomsday Predictions (LiveScience.com)
Mayan calendars and doomsday predictions, it seems like a good time to
put such notions in context. » Full Story on Yahoo! News
i usally do not even care what is said in a movie, but on this one......... look, lets be a little realistic here, if the end of the world is going to come, then it will come and there is not alot we as humans can do about it, lets hope not, that it does happen, and if it does, i hope and pray that it will be quick! non of that lingering stuff!
"No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left. Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. But understand this; If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. So you must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him." ~ Matt 24:36-44
The End Times are upon us!!! Quick!! All you fundamentalists, kill yourselves!!!!!
this is a christian mindset. The Mayans who made the damn calendar dont even believe the world is ending. Only Christians believe in this junk. And it will never happen because jesus is a myth and will not be coming back anywhere.
The end of times will be when our sun goes nova.....by that time, Im sure we (or some form of "we") will be long gone. End of time stories are as old as stories of gods and demons. We are so primative!! Some day our planet will cast off superstition and embrace science and skeptical thinking!
I love the idea that a people that died out a few thousand years ago, had the inside track to when the world would end!! God, were dumb!!
Guardian:
It's such a shame that you've been brainwashed into believing that mythological crap. Grow up and realize that when those fairy tales were written people were trying to explain how things worked. Like the weather and the ending of the last ice age. Do you also believe in Zeus and Odin? If not, why not? it's the same kind of mythology. And, it's all nonsense!
With all due respect to the author, I'd like to present a clarification to this article, specifically about Joseph Smith. According to the teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (nicknamed the Mormons), Jesus Christ did visit the earth during the dedication of a temple. What do you believe the "end of times" will look like? Just as a question to ponder, I'd like to ask if the terrible wars and natural calamities that we see so often around the world couldn't be part of the "end of times". I believe that the things that Joseph Smith prophesied are true.
There is more to a prediction (Prophet accuracy) then the article has lead to(do yourself a favor and get a dictionary). There has been a gross miss-use of language in this article. Oh the wonderful trickery and vocal manipulation of words; especially when a civilization has miss-used its language for so long, "Prophetic" Predictions are made by people, not by animals or objects so there goes a discount of a couple of your "missed predictions. Y2K was not Labeled as the end of life just the possible breakdown of the worlds economic system, so there goes that one. And for fun September is the 7th month, October =8, November =9. Now that you have been enlightened; have you learned anything? Probably not because so few people read or go back and think about the redundant language of their slavery.
My Dad is a "Doomsday Preacher". He's been saying that the sky is falling since the 1950's, and everytime something catastrophic happens, he grabs the newspaper, points, and goes, "See! See! I told you so!" He's also very intelligent science-wise, and anyway....
I keep reminding my Dad that yes, the sky will eventually fall, but the Bible says that we are not to constantly look to the skies for Christ's return, we are to be busy doing the Lord's work until He does come.
I got 10.5 Apocylypse and Catagory 7 (which is a great tv movie) but I also saw a documentary that said that the world wouldn't end till 2060 and the bible says "that it is not for you to understand when these things will come" because "this is a wicked generation, they seek for a sign and none shall be given it".
I cant decide which is the bigger pile of s*** .. the hordes of inaccurate prophecys or this mind blowingly awful movie about one of them. Not once has anyone found one of thesse "prediction" in time to stop a catastrophy. They only discover them after the event has happened and they know what to look for. Horosocpes have a higher success rate than any of these hopeless liars.
Correction, Joseph Smith never stated that Christ would come in 56 years. No one knows when he will come. Those who are faithful will watch and look and strive to learn more of him. For those who do not believe, it will be no different then when Christ was sacrificed and the earth trembled. You will see...
Im not religious at all, but I question the wars . the storms, and violence that has happen over the years. These things have been spoke of long before our time, and although the dates have not been exact, that still doesnt mean they arent happening. Think about it... War, weather, and now this global reccession. They say the economy will be better by 2011 but its so bad now we have old men robbing people to stay alive , and young men robbing people to support there families. If things continue like they are how do you think its gonna be in two years... If your goona have kids i would wait..
End times prophecies have been circulating for thousands of years and will continue to circulate until people wake up from their servitude to religious fantasy. Our belief in an all-destroying God is nothing more than a projection of our own self-destructive tendencies. We are, for the most part, a woefully uncreative species.
P.T. Barnum should have the last word here: "There's a sucker born every minute."
Based on what I have saw in the preview to this movie, I will wait and rent it on DVD. Looks like more special effects and zero plot. Much like that previous Transformers movie. I look forward to another date. 1/20/2013
Mormon Armageddon, 1891 or earlier
Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormon church, called a meeting of his church leaders in February 1835 to tell them that he had spoken to God recently, and during their conversation he learned that Jesus would return within the next 56 years, after which the End Times would begin promptly.
where do they stand NOW ! lol
The Bible teaches 100% accuracy or they are a false prophet. If you dig deep enough you will find 100% Biblical predictions that have come true up to the creation of the USA with some last day prophecies yet to occur. www lastdaybooks com
Prove the Bible is a myth. The New testament alone has 1000 times more old manuscript documentation than Socrates or other old writers yet it is myth? It’s documented by 24,000 sources! Explain to me how a Bible written in 66 books by over 20 different authors over thousands of years contains the exact same theme through the whole book and it 'by chance' picks up the life of Christ in the middle? Many have never honestly read that which they criticize. There are thousands of archeological discoveries that’s been discovered proving archeological Biblical accuracy and critics ignore this and live in their own world of denial to cling to their beliefs.
Jehovah's Witnesses also indireclty implied that the end could happen in 1975. Some of their followers including some in the congregation I attened sold all there belongings, cashed pensions and racked up credit card bills thinking armegeddon was about to happen. The church's head quarters did nothing to stop these members perhaps of the increase in membership due to the imminent Armageddon kept them hushed.
What about Moses, he predicted that the planet will be covered and destroyed by water and nobody believe him until they were having to swim, beautiful story you should read it sometime. The native americans said the world has been destroyed 6 times by different elements but only to be born again into a new world. Read your Bible please.
God Bless
Wow, what a lousy, incorrect article. First to the author and the rest of you, the Mayan prediction has nothing to do with Christianity or any other modern religion. It might have been religious to them, but for all we know about them (which isn't much thanks to the Spanish), their religion was a reverence of the moon and stars. It is believed they watched the night skies for thousands of years, noting when unusual (to them) astronomical events happened. In other words, if they saw a shooting star, comet, meteor, etc., the sky watcher (for lack of a better term) for that night would make a record of it. Prior to about a year ago when all these silly "doomsday" shows started on TV, the best explanation I read about 2012 was that they observed a comet or other large body making a pass by the Earth more than once over a period of thousands of years (they were fanatical about their records).
I love listening to all these idiots waiting around for RAPTURE and the return of their mythic figure, while others claim there is an invisible planet/asteroid/spaceship/star that will come across shooting by the earth and flip our magnetic poles. And these are of course the same people that believe that every politician is a reptilian alien, and the US government is spraying chemicals trails in the air by way of commercial airliners. If any of what I've said sounds ridiculous, its because it IS.
The past predictions were not based on any scientific or galactic changes that actually effected life as we know it on earth, such as will occur in 2012.
Scientific tracking and calculations show conclusively that in 2012, all the planets in the solar system will be in perfect alignment with the earth. This is scientifically known to occur about every 50,000 years.
The previous times it has happened according to scientific findings, cataclysmic changes occurred on the earth due to the magnetic pull caused by the event. This s.h.i.t. is real!
My question is if the Myans Calendar is the end why didn't they just say so, wouldn't they want to warn their own people. So silly
There is without a doubt with 100% certainty there will be an end to all things but I truly wish people would stop making predictions because no one knows and it is wrong to make these. Nothing will happen in 2012 just like nothing happened on Y2K.
Joseph Smith's own words: "I was once praying very earnestly to know the time of the coming of the Son of Man, when I heard a voice repeat the following; 'Joseph, my son, if thou livest until thou art eighty-five years old thou shalt see the face of the Son of Man, therefore let this suffice, and trouble me no more concerning this matter' . I was left thus, without being able to decide whether this coming referred to the beginning of the millennium or to some previous appearing, or whether I should die and thus see his face".
So this prophecy came true. Joseph Smith died before he was 85 (in 1844), and nothing happened. But if he had lived until he was 85 and nothing happened, then you could make a big deal out of it. But as you can see from Joseph's comment, the prophecy wasn't mainly about the second coming.
Why pay any attention to a doomsday prediction from a culture that failed to predict their own demise?
