Florida Wrestles with Its Python Snake Problem - Yahoo! News

Floridians are generally not flummoxed by the variety of reptile species that invade their state. But that nonchalance vanished last week when a 2-year-old was strangled to death in her crib by a 9-ft. Burmese python » Full Story on news.yahoo.com

All sales of these large snakes should be banned. period. They belong in the wild, in their native habitat.

I say pay people so per dead snake they bring in from the everglades. This will quickly get rid of the snake problem and help stimulate their local economy.

What on earth is the appeal of having a large snake in the house ? ? ? I realize that snakes have their place in the natural world, BUT DON"T HAVE THE BIGGIES IN YOUR HOME. Talk about an accident waiting to happen !

I just don't get the whole mentality of keeping the things. They're certainly not cuddly or loving, and if you want other people to think you're cool then get out and do something cool with your life.

I think most people including the Wild offcials are ignorent and I would even say are stupid. I grew up with these snakes . They are dangerous and there is no such thing as an alpha in the house. Their main job is to eat, survive and grow. Eat again, sleep, grow and......
The nation should make it illegal for anyone to bringing in any sort of exotic animal. If you want to see a foreign and exotic animal go to the zoo.

150,000 pythons?! thats a whole lot of snakes that dont belong. shoot the morons that let them escape into the wild.

Now if they would just require Pitt Bull dogs & other Dangerous Breeds to be registered and licensed...

The sad part is how pythons escape because of Slack owners...the typical snake owner is a dirty, nasty pothead who hasn't got enough sense to keep an animal, much less a child. I've seen my fair share down here in Florida.

It's time to TOTALLY BAN the snakes & offer a Bounty for each Python Head the hunters can bring in. :)

Pumpkin, it's the same macho mentality as having a pit bull for a pet. They think having a large snake makes them a man, just as people who have dangerous pit bulls think it makes them tough.
I hope officials have the good sense to get ahead of this thing before it gets completely out of hand down there. You do not want this animal to become common in this country, and left unchecked, it is possible to find them one day as far up as NJ and as far west as CA. Also, given that they produce so many young per hatching, it wouldn't take long for their numbers to grow to epidemic proportions. And those offspring would increase the number even more like a pyramid scheme gone wrong. Nothing good could possibly come from this. The same goes for the more dangerous species, such as, cobras, mambas, etc. These should only be allowed under the strictest of regulations and only kept at zoo's and the like....never by civilians.

This is just another immigration idea that went all wrong.

I don't advocate socialistic policies however, large and potentially dangerous snake owners should have to obtain a license by taking a course to ensure they understand the proper handling and provide a safe and secure habitat for them. The license could be free minus administrative fees, and the course fee could be capped at a reasonable amount like $25-100 dollars. Snake owners need to be held responsible for injuries and deaths, and responsible enough to provide a living environment efficient enough to prevent an escape. People should not own large dangerous animals, unless they are educated and qualified to handle them in a safe mannor. Snakes are wild animals, they cannot be domesticated. Creating a bounty on non-poisonous snakes is stupid, it will encourage the slaughter of other native snake species. I believe they should be handled like gators, if they invade an area, they can be removed.

So now we know, All kinds of exotic animals are released in to the wild by the public all the time. From snakes to walking catfish, and water rats,The Bounty system is the only thing that makes sense.imports of plants and animals can harm lots of eceo systems,.see the plants growing all over the south.

People were crazy for wanting the nasty things in the first place. The boyfriend should be charged for having it in the household with a child. I would put Sarah Palin in charge of hunting them.

Too bad Florida isn't connected to Mexico. These snakes would solve the illegal immigration problem with little effort from the border patrol.

Global warming is to be blamed for this. The other day we learned about new spots on the sun, then the news about el nino effects, and now pythons coming out in large number, God knows what's next. We need to act now and pass the energy bill. President Obama need to override the legislative branch and sign this bill into law if the party of "NO" keep putting their partisan politics above the interests of people. Enough of repukes childish games in congress.

since most of the counties and states are , rather short for revenue,,,,,

hey , a snake hunting license, 5 bucks, 10 bucks, something simple, and maybe a refund after 10 snake heads or more, (I would bet most people would get a few then call it quits for a while, the fun wears off)

then on the DNR websites, they need to have all the tasty ways to cook these things, and wanna bet, state income will go up, and alot of people will not be going hungry like they are now

Right a decent size bounty on them like $700 a pop for them would end the problem quick, especially if bounty hunters are licensed to legally hunt in the everglades for them only.
But don't forget to remind them,......gators are way more plentiful and dangerous in the glades.
I lived in Florida for three years and when the big storms came washing creeks and rivers into the residentials, lookout,......gators are all dangerous but those over 12 ft are lethal and anything is on they're mind for dinner thats near,........including 20 ft burmese pythons.
Good luck and go get'em.

Can you say "BOUNTY" at $20 to $25 a head I'd say you create something like a "GOLD RUSH" in South Florida. Big or small..pay for them all...

A good snake is one laying on the road with Goodyear tire marks all over it. I live on the border of a forest. Bow and arrow season is year round for me.

The "Boyfriend" should be charged with her death under NEGLECT. No one with any type of small education would put a child in a home with a dangerouos animal...especially one that makes no noise or sends an alarm when something is going wrong. That poor thing never had a chance thanks to the ignorance in that household. The mother should be charged as well. No one should allow this risk to be present when a child is around, EVER.

Greedy, money-hungry pet shops. They're not doing the snakes any favor by them living in captivy at a person's house either.

Make it illegal to bring them in.

I'm not so sure I believe the boyfriend is innocent. It is too blatant of a mistake it seems like to me.
I'd break out a polygraph test on him just to be sure.

Find a use for the snakes and pay $20 each for them. This will get crackheads off the street and into the swamp hunting snakes. Once in the swamps they will start fighting over the snakes and this will potentially take care of more than one problem ?
