Toll of war in Afghanistan raising questions in Britain...allies or not?
I wonder if the U.S. questioned the toll of war in Europe...1940-1945.
I thought this is what NATO was established for...a treaty organization to help protect one another....I guess it only applies when European's are attacked and in need of U.S. military help.
I'm sorry for the loss to family members but the loss is for the greater good. 178 dead in 7 years (figures from the article), in military terms, is excellent. Would we have given up after thousands upon thousands of troops died on D-Day ? No comparrison. We are fighting a similar war - global domination. Whose side do you want to be on ? A free Democratic world or one run by suppressive, religious, dictator like nuts who rule by fear.

The Russians who were alot more tougher and numerous on the ground and used far more heavy handed and barbaric tactics against the Mujahideen, were in fact fought out to stand still and vanquished in bloody war of attrition and in the end and withdrew in infamy...
The fate of the 'coalition of the willing ' will be far worse...

Alexander the Great was defeated in Helmand region. The Brits were defeated 3 times in the past. The Soviets were defeated here. The Americans are defeated. Didn't these people learn from history?
Just let the Afghans have their own system and let them rule themselves. Afghans have a history of dying for their country and fighting invaders. Empires do not last there.

I'm really confused with our thought process. The middle east historically have been barbarians. They always will! Fighting and even winning is a losing battle; some other barbarian will take over. We can't change thousands of years of what they do and done! How are you going to beat any nation that believes they're right?
Did anyone ever consider that maybe the U.K. (and U.S.) is using punky-little Afghanistan to test their newest weapons and tactics and keep their fighting force trained in real life scenarios? (Boy, nothing like real life 'enemies' to sharpen those Predator drone bombing skills)
Thanks to their presence in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Brits now have a small but experienced, battle trained, fighting force.

This is crap, Britain has lost less than 200 troops in Afghanistan and they are bitching about their human cost. Look at how many Britons died in WW2 yet you never heard anyone complaining about that human cost.
Great Britain, sorry we lied to you to get you to fight in our little mess.( a mess of our choosing). Next time do not listen to our government as willingly, for our U.S. government will lie cheat or steal to have it's way. Our government has no honor or even gives a damn about it's people.
You don't really think that Osama Bin ladin actually got away from Tora Bora do you ? he was let go so, that the US government can continue the "search" for him in one country after another. Well, the next time the US conjers up a falsehood to gain your support tell them to go to hell.
why is it that these roadside bombs being planted overnight can't be stopped? It seems simple to do some night recognicanse in place and just stop the problem when it starts.......we have drones, night vision cameras and satellite imagery.........just blow away the bomb planters when they are in the act..........after a few dozen are gone the problem may stop.
This is a war of ideaologies. I would rather live in our Western society even tho we are not as free as we think, than in any Religious Totalitarian Society such as the Taliban want.
The problem is that we are trying to fight sterile, precision bombing, low casualty, no colateral (cicvilian deaths) war. It's impossible to win a war this way.
I would bet my life that if the powers that be in the USA alone would unleash the "Dogs Of War" of the United States Military alone, Aghanistan insurgents would not last a month.
to understand the war in afghanistan, iraq, etc..is to understand the principle "war is peace" as described in Orwells book 1984...
The US goes to war, but they never win. They are only playing at it. The poor soldiers do all the suffering for the politicians. Send the president and the congressmen over there. Let them do the fighting. They love war so much!
