Exhaust cone falls off jet onto NY home's lawn (AP)

AP - An engine tailcone fell off a Delta Air Lines jet shortly after takeoff Thursday and plummeted thousands of feet before landing harmlessly on a lawn in a Long Island residential neighborhood. » Full Story on Yahoo! News

Planes falling apart in the skies now! Why is this happening? Kind of a coincidence that our country is also falling apart as well!

No harm, no foul. And the passengers never missed a beat vs being stuck on the tarmac for hours while the maint crew slapped the piece back on with a rivet gun.

Obviously it's an indication of a poorly maintained aircraft.

i guess this is obama's fault too? some of you americans are so sorry. during bush's horrid 8yrs many were called "un-american" for speaking againts him. yet, the same ones are now those who critisize obama.

i know the reason why, but of course denial is still alive and well amongst certain people (you know who you are)...

Now its the republicans' fault? I don't think either party is any good, but why is it that whenever anything goes wrong, its the fault of the Reps or Dems............I think the FAA is pretty much non-pertisan........the airlines are usually priavte businesses, regulated by the FAA.

If it turned out that off-loaded aircraft maintenance is somehow involved, yes George W. is at fault..........much of American business in all sectors was off-loaded during his 8 horrid years.

The US Government is supposed to govern the US. Both the Dems and Republicans suck at this. All Bush did was right the Iraq war. I know there were some good reasons for that, but did Bush do anything else for this country? I'm simlpy asking. And please don't assume that just because I'm asking about Bush means I'm an Obama supporter............Obama wants us to be a socialist country.........I've lived in England and have friends from Canda............no thank you!! I'm just saying, its high time our Government spent more time addressing domestic issues (and not just by throwing borrowed money at the problems) Funny how a part falling off an airplane can lead to this conversation :)

Officers found a 3-foot-by-4-foot cone-shaped piece of metal . . .

were they still able to flush it?

There is a lack of money for maintenance because our governments promote growth which means the money goes to expansion and advertising to promote that expansion.
Soon our cities will collapse because the money to maintain them will have all been spent on new projects.
Beware folks: Money is just a counter for resources. Once the resources and our immune systems are gone the money is useless.

I guess they wanted to be lighter so that they can fly fast and save time. Good thing that they didn't drop passangers or their luggages. Very caring airlines. LOL.

It's funny that the American consumer never looks in the mirror.

In the 1980's, I had to fly many, many times from Rochester, NY to Washington DC on Agony Airlines (Alleghany). The cheapest tickets were around $350. You might be able to find a $500 ticket to Los Angeles back then. Getting to Atlanta cost as much as going to Disney World and they weren't cheap.

It's almost 30 years later and it still is $320 to ROC to IAD and $376 to go to LAX.

In the meantime, the cost of housing doubled, the cost of gasoline doubled, the cost of milk and beef doubled. And yet we complain that pieces are falling off the airplanes due to shoddy (and yes maybe overseas) maintenance.

Maybe the airlines should be subsidized like Amtrak so that each ticket costs the American taxpayer $32 in losses. Dang, I am so tired of folks in this upside down America.

Who gets to keep the piece? The home owner or the airlines company or the COPS?

If the pilot did it intentionally then he should in the airforce. Coz he dropped it so precisely without hitting the home or causing any damage to the house just at the backyard. Lucky home owner! Wait a minute - is that the pilot's home and he wanted to drop and keep a souvenir from his plane?
Hmm...someone should check it!!??.

This is merely the pure reason I will not fly anywhere, no where, I know the maintenance of my vehicle, I do all the work, However, Aviation maintenance is not as thorough. When a plane lands there is no time to take measures to repair airplanes, which in turn leads to malfunctions, But my hail goes out to Sully Sulenberger for landing his disabled aircraft like a surf board on the hudson here in NY

Just as cheaply made as cars and building structures these days. For what.... to save money, gas and energy, but not in thought to save lives.
