"The Northwest chapter of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA has filed a grievance with the world's largest airline operator, asking it to offer the red dress up to size 28"
Size 28..? Jesus you'd make a passenger pay for two tickets......
Not to disparage against Large people, but if I were on a flight with someone that large, and there was an emergency, most large people cannot move that fast, and I would also Not want someone Blocking my exit because of their size. I believe that it has Always been an Unwritten rule that a stewardess be taller and not skinny, but certainly not a size 28. I hope not to offend anyone, as I do have sisters and other relatives that are on the heavier side, but they would also be the first to agree with me. Sorry, but I think there are More Important things in this world to worry about right now. This article actually kinda made me mad. It just shows how selfish people are. Worry about health care or something that is more important than a smaller or larger sexy red dress. I bet children that are going without food & healthcare right now could care less about your Red Dresses and their Sizes!
No offense, but a size 28 woman does not need to be bootie-bopping up and down the isle on a plane in a dress. I have a hard time walking the isle without bumping people, and I am nowhere near a size 28. That's a big ole woman! How does she fit in the stewardess airline seat? Let's be real people...big people cannot wear everything skinnier people can wear. It doesn't look good. Think spandex, daisy dukes, and halter tops! Just because you may have no shame and think you look hot, most other people have a hard time looking at all that flesh. Let's be real. You are that size because you don't eat right and exercize...obviously you have no chronic health problems or serious pain or injury that limits your ability to work and fly around the country, so instead of complaining that the dresses aren't big enough, spend that time and energy getting some exercise and you will be able to wear a smaller dress.
If you are a flight attendent and your are bigger than a size 18, how can you fit in the aisles, much less in that dress?
Jobs involving public safety must be able to regulate size of employees. I've had drinks knocked over by fat butt stews (well once), and a very old stew actually 'rested' during meal service. They need an annual safety audit involving movement, seed and agility to do the job.
I've also had young, sexy but lazy stews. They shouldn't get a red dresss either!
One shouldn't be a flight attendent if one is that large. One could very likely become a safety risk for passengers and their fellow crew. If memory serves me, isn't there health and safety test flight crew are supposed to undertake yearly? If that is the case, I find it highly unlikely that a 28+ size flight crew member could could pass this test within the expected norms of a healthy adult. If we are talking about ground crew, then by all means them to look like 99 luftballoons if they want to. Who cares?
Look, you want sexy young women, not fat cows like most of the stewardesses on Northworst Airlines. I only fly on carriers where there are "hot-looking" stewardesses. There are some scarey looking women on Northworst, ewhu..........
Give me a break. Is it too many lawyers or over-sensitivity? I am dumbfounded by the cultural pettiness of our great country at times!
I would also be interested in an international sizing spectrum, which eliminates wrong purchases, clandestine operations to let women think they're still the same size etc. when it is actually the opposite, to afford people to be able to buy a garment and the piece of mind, that it will fit for whomever it is purchased.
What happened to there being a "weight limit" for flight attendants?? That's a freakin' huge size. Why would you wear a dress like that if you were that large anyway??
A size 18 is over 235 pounds. A linebacker for the New England Patriots weighs 240. And they want to charge for luggage?
My biggest concern isn't their garb, it is their lack of pay. The co-pilot on that commuter that crashed in NY killing everyone aboard, was making $17,500 a year and untrained. Pathetic!
Hey Fatso! Get off your butt and eat less. No body wants a flight attendant over size 18...the isles are too narrow for your badonkadonk.
Come on America, lets get back to reality and say it like it is, when you fat you fat. You eat too much and your a slob!
Funny! A few summers ago, we had a flight on Northwest, and the female "flight attendant" left a bit to be desired. Remember Flip Wilson's "Geraldine" get-up? Identical twin. When I requested another pack of crackers (only my 2nd on a 4-hour flight), she literally heaved about 20 of them in my lap with an obvious sneer. "There ya go, honey!", she said, swiveling those wide hips and flinging that fake redheaded "Geraldine" wig. Umm...she probably would have been one of those size 28's.
This is ridiculous. The petty stupidities that unions are reduced to today are just utterly absurd.
I remember in elementary school we were taught how unions helped people overcome unfair obstacles in workplaces that they couldn't just quit from because there wasn't a decent place to work elsewhere. t's not like Hooters for crying out loud where they don't have any other uniform, the flight attendants can dress in other uniforms that are bigger. Oh no, we must have THAT red uniform.
Unions actually had a point to their existence then because they had the organization and support to organize legal and peaceful resistance targeted at places that were unfair or unsafe. And they had the backing to send to special interest representatives to Washington to talk to lawmakers.
Now that the important work is done, they resort to doing stuff that is pointless and hurts business more than helping it just to look like they are still important.
Today, Unions are good for only two things. To give people a place to turn if their business is breaking the law and hiding it, and to lobby lawmakers on behalf of their special interest group.
Then most Unions are bought over by various interests, so I don't know that they are even accomplishing the first point to their continued existence.
I thought the airlines were having financial problems. How do they afford to hire a designer for the uniforms? They are flight attendents not runway models.
You guys are bigots!! You know damn well that over size 28 makes a perfect safety floatation device!
This entire country needs a wake up call. No one should be that size. It's not natural, with the only exception being those who are suffering some sort of true health problem (eating too many Twinkies is not a true health risk). Stop eating so much and get off your butt and get some exercise. We are already running a risk of not having Social Security for all of us when we retire, and now we're running the risk of a national health crisis when all these fatties overload our health system with all of their health problems associated with being overweight. Enough is enough!
The general concensus of doctors, if only the health issue of a woman in the range of a size 28 is addressed(not to mention there are already height restrictions that preclude her being above or below a certain level considered 'normal'), should stop any PC considerations. We have pilots 60 years of age having heart attacks in mid-flight and strength issues of out-of-shape attendants in an emergency already to be taken into consideration; must we have eyesores and baggage restrictions because of the girth of the personnel to think about???
WOOOO HOOOOO Looks like we're going back to the days of Stewardesses...
A size 28 Stewardess... is that legal?
Anything over a 10 seems oversized for a Stewardess, as I recall
What if one of the male stewardesses decide he wants to where the sexy red dress?!?
Size 28? Are you Kiddiing me? My God, how can anyone that large be connected to the flight industry and safely do their job? I go along with the majority of the people that state that we should get real and so should the unions. It boils down to a Federal thing about discrimination on race, sex and etc. So, I guess until things change, like passengers unable to get out of the burning plane after a nasty crash landing that could have gotten out, but big old size 28 flight attendant standing on her right to work, was also standing blocking aisle to get out. Flying with the airlines nowadays really suck, this just adds to the problem.
The airlines need to do something different with the flight attendants. Because of unions they are too old and over weight. Many could not perform safety procedures if need because of size and age. Many have become so rude it's unreal.
Only the American airlines have this problem. Thailand airline has the best look'n attendants of any airline. If you were to put some one size 18 or over into there uniforms it would be like trying to pack 10lbs of sausage into a hotdog skin.
I never even heard of a size 28 lady until I read this article. Wouldn't a size 28 lady need a power chair to move about. Size 28 ladies are regular riders on the courtesy carts in major airports. I have never seen a size 28 stewardess..... how does a person become size 28 and expect to become or remain a flight attendant. Size 28!!
Are you kidding me? Looks like the flight attendants union has too much time on their hands to take up such a petty item.
Can someone wearing a size 28 get up those skinny aisles on the plane? Sounds like they would have to get dressed for the cargo hold.
Your kidding right? I'm not a small person and the seats and isles are very tight. I've seen flight attendants up to maybe size 20'ish but 28? I wouldn't think a size 28 person could "safely" get through the emergency exit row. Do they test people like that. I can see myself burning to death waiting for an overweight flight attendant to "try" and help people exit that plane. Now OK that is sort of a mean attitude. I'm sorry it really is about safety at the end of the day. Typical union attitude. They wonder why the airlines are struggling.
