Patients fret over proposed Tylenol restrictions (AP)

AP - Proposed limits on Tylenol, a painkiller as common as pain itself, have left many consumers fearful, confused and wondering where to turn for relief. The potential government crackdown on acetaminophen, Tylenol's main ingredient, would affect everyone from occasional pill poppers to chronic pain sufferers who rely on daily doses to make their lives more bearable. » Full Story on Yahoo! News

Why is everyone freakin' out? If it works for you and you have your doctors thumbs up, then keep taking it....who cares what a the scare mongers say? It is no less safe then it was 2 days ago. I have severe RA of the spine, and you better believe that I will go off of what MY doctor says, not what some pencil pusher who is trying to make tylenol safe for EVERY person who takes it says....

Besides, think back to '97....anyone who drank and took tylenol was going to die of liver failure. They never took it off the market and the death rate from this never rose.....

Gee, here's a novel idea...Why don't we try HEALING people so they don't need painkillers in the first place?

Seriously, that is why we have warning labels on products. If you are dumb enough that you don't heed the warning on the side of the box that says "Warning! Taking more than the recommended dose could result in injury or death," than that is all you. We don't need the government wasting it's time and our tax dollars to "crack down on acetaminophen". How about they spend their time cracking down on rapists and child abusers.

If you have some magical wand that will heal Rhumatiod Arthitis I would gladly travel to see you, C. Unfortunatly, not everyone using Tylenol has a choice or a cure available. Try again.

No matter what, a Darwinian purpose will be served. I think I'll stick to Motrin until the FDA decides that gives me organ damage too.

I guess there is always willow bark to chew on for pain relief. That leaves more people buying prescription medications. Try having a migraine and not having medication that works!

Addicts will always find something to abuse, and morons will always ignore instructions and hurt themselves. Why must this goverment come in and over regulate industry that already has many restrictions. Due to allergies Vicodin is the ONLY RX pain killer I can take, and I've seen the reductions over the years with quantity restrictions and the narcotic registry where you sign at the pharmacy. Government needs to get away from our healthcare until they provide it as in other countries, til then this is my body and my trusted Dr's job to inform and make sure meds are being delivered correctly. I'm all for Darwinism let the addicts and morons take themselves out of the equation!

you people complaining dont realize that acetometaphin is in a lot of over the counter medications that many may not realize its in there.for example people taking tylenol for a headache might also take cough syrup for a cough that also contains acetometaphin thus overdose themelves.

The FDA can't insure the nation's food supply is safe. Perhaps they should try to get their act together over the food supply before they start worrying about otc pain killers.

How did we survive this long without these wizards sticking their noses into everything?
Next thing you know, they'll find it's not safe for calves to drink cows milk or babies to drink their mother's milk.
Have we really raised a whole generation that it so dumb that they can't read instructions?

Some of us are allergic to Asprin and anything related to it and therefore can only take acetaminophen for fever and pain. i have no alternative other than to take acetaminophen my Pharmacist monitors what is perscribed to me and let's me know if it has Asprin in or not and won't despense anything with Asprin in to me. What is my alternative if acetaminophen is removed or strictly limited?

It's all in being an educated consumer. I suffer from arthritis but have no stomach problems, so I start out my day with one multivitamin and 975 mg of aspirin. I do engineering design work and I climb around like a chimpanzee at 58 yo. If I have a cold, I make sure that there is no other pain relief med in my OTC remedy.

Warnings should come with all prescriptions or over the counter meds.
But let American's choose what is best for them, which way they want to die. Too much government!

This is the beginning of "the final solution". If you live past 60 you are going to be told "to just die". The government will determine when and where. Nazi Germany all over again. Horde these pills now before the government deems you "unfit" to take them./ BS? Watch - you ain't seen nothing yet!

Tylenol = responsible for 50% of liver failure cases in USA. Sad but true. Should have been taken off the market 20 years ago.

This seems really insane! If you're in pain then you need the drugs. You can only get them (legally) through a doctor's prescription. It's up to doctors to not over prescribe.

Those drugs obtained illegally are not/should not be the concern of the government in this 'argument'. That's another issue entirely.

It's the same argument as with guns. Law abiding folks will own guns 'properly'. And even if you ban guns the scumbags will still find a way to obtain them anyway. It'll be the same with these pain-killers.

I find the government's argument to be without a great deal of substance. This government is getting way out of control in its rabid push to control people's lives.

JUST ANOTHER WAY FOR THE GOV TO MAKE SURE THAT RETARDS WHO CANT FOLLOW DIRECTIONS UNDERMINE THE REST OF SOCIETY . 200 PEOPLE YEAH WE REALLY NEED TO BAN THIS . NOT

so they are gonna cut back the amount of acetaminophen in tylenol and that is gonna fix something? Couldn't you just take more tylenol pills and get the same amount of that acetaminophen?

I wonder how much money the makers of Motrin, and other ibuprofen products, have shoved into political pockets to fund this scare tactic solely to boost their sales? Tylenol has been linked to pain relief for so long that is probably more cost effective for them to pay off some senators than to actually market their product, or god forbid make a better and safer one.

That is what this country has come to. Everyone and everything has it's price. If you don't see it in the frivilous lawsuits, and the campaign finances, you are either ignorant or blind.

Seriously people, more people die of the common flu than the 200 people that died from acetaminophen (this is another swine flu-90 people died media hype). Once again our democractic government is aiding the requst of the minority not the majority of people who successfully need to take Tylenol for pain relief. Any pain med, if taken wrong can lead to death or liver damage. Are they going to ban them all-oh no-because despite what the government tells you, the government makes millions and millions of dollars a year off the drug industry! Take a look at Sudafed, how many people actually buy the new version-no you go and show your license and buy the original version so you can actually clear your head! This is all about one person that died and they are trying to take a stand!

The real crime here is making Tylenol at all. It's a deadly and dangerous drug. You don't need to take 17 to get liver failure. Liver failure can come from taking 1 and getting liver damage, which can lead to liver failure. And for someone with diabetes, etc., taking two every few hours can mean imminent death (i.e., you may not have time to wait for a liver transplant)..

I have had enough already of the federal government continuing to try and control more and more of our lives. This is getting way out of hand. Why should people suffer because their are some idiots who abuse drugs? If someone is taking a drug which is helping cure their pain, why does the federal government have the right to prevent them from taking the drug? People spend years trying to find the right medication to cure their illness and it could all be thrown away because of the Obama's greed for power. It is time for America to stand up and finally say NO to the federal government's meddling into our personal affairs.

Great job, FDA. Before long, the only pain relief that will actually work for people suffering from severe chronic painful conditions and still be affordable for everyone will be a bullet to the head. Acetaminophen is all I have to keep my migraines at bay (and even then, it doesn't do the best job... unless I DO overdose a little... and people, if you haven't had a migraine, you can't possibly comprehend the ability of BLINDING PAIN to spur little "stupid" decisions like that.) I've got no health insurance and haven't seen ANY doctor in 2 years because I can't afford it.

They shouldn't make any moves to remove or restrict acetaminophen until there is an effective, AFFORDABLE over-the-counter replacement for it!

Dr. Lee is foolish and ignorant. He wants me to quit taking a regular dose of Vicodin which HAS made my pain entirely manageable for over half a decade and then take an much more POWERFUL narcotic Oxycontin? At the same time saying the over the counter doses of acetaminophen are ok? Hey! I take lees than the over the counter everyday and it has taken care of me! I haven't taken "ever increasing doses". Pain management doesn't work that way. Yes your body does develop a tolerance to Vicodin. But thats the beauty of it. While you body develops a tolerance the PAIN DOESNT! So soon it only kills pain with virtually NO BUZZ! That of course is a disaster to people looking for a HIGH FROM THE DRUG! But it worked GREAT for legitimate PAIN management!!!

You know it's sad when intelligent people have no clue of what they are doing. Sometimes the people who plot these new laws or movements have no idea what others are going thru so they fail to see how something with bad effects can be used for good effects. These people should mind their own business and leave people who actually need the medications alone. What kind of world is this?

In this country of limited and monitored freedom's it doesn’t surprise me. One more freedom downsized to a governmental control. I wish everyone would call it what it is, a country with out freedom. The only freedom we have that is not controlled is religion but it can not be spoken in schools, work, ect... Oh wait it is controlled. What can we do as Americans to fix it, nothing. If we try what would happen. The government wants to control internet, blogs, ect... Big brother is already watching. They ploy on our emotions because there is a few individuals that die because of some freak chance or by not following guide lines. The rest pay the price. Make a list of everything that once made us "free" google each individually and find all the laws and regulations that have changed it to what it is today.
