Maybe McNair bought the gun for her to for her 'self-protection'. My guess is she gave him a deadline and when he backed off (likely for the umpteenth time) or told her it was over, Pow! He was just stringing her along. He may have been involved with other women, bringing them back to this playpen and she caught him. The usual BS.

A gunshot wound inflicted on one's self , to the head, would be impossible to be located underneath the body. It takes seconds for the investigators to determine if gunshot residue was present on Kazemi's hands and this would basically confirm or rule out murder/suicide. The investigators misguide or give the media limited information so they're able to to place focus on their main suspect.
