When we talk about movie masterpieces, what usually come to mind are epic works that wow us with their scale, pictures that spring from grand ambitions and even grander budgets. Poppy is meant to be compassionate, empathic--but she just comes across as a non-stop talking, sarcastic 30 year-old giggler. How can we possibly like her, when she acts like an insincere twit all during the first half of the movie? The flamenco teacher and the driving instructor are portrayed as cartoon villains. And even they engender more sympathy than Poppy. (I'm not crazy about flamenco dancing, but I thought the teachers explanation of it was interesting. And Poppy just flits about in a mocking dance. Poppy's a teacher herself! Couldn't she empathize?) This movie is smug. It does everything wrong.
