Some years back, as I was standing with a fellow baby boomer holding signs decrying the drug war, he reflected that “It’s the same kind of people protesting now as it was during Viet Nam.” Then we looked around and I said “It’s not the same KIND of people, it IS the same people.”
This article gives me hope that the next generation is getting ready to step up. We just need to let them do it their way. Maybe at some point we will recognize each other.
The lead photo reminds me of a nighttime shot I took in 2001 at the Tulia “Never Again” rally. It has been seven years. I wonder how many of the kids in the picture are in jail now.

At bottom are a couple of links about the Tulia incident. (IMO, the whole undercover operation was started to show a need for drug testing in the schools.)

This is so true and so well written it made me cry like a baby! I've been telling my twenty-something children for years that this was possible, and now it's true. For the first time in my life I can take pride in my President.
Thank you, Heather. I hope you do, indeed, speak for most of your generation, for if so there really is hope. Please stay engaged. We need everyone, but especially those with fresh eyes, to see and care about the world around and within us. There is so much to care about, and so much joy to experience in being open to caring. Good Luck!!!! I'll be right by your side!!!
Altough I would agree with many of descriptions growing up Gen-X and can appreciate your election night sentiment, I whole heartly disagree that Gen-X needs to apologize to anyone. We are a different generation, we come from a different perspective, we have, as you pointed out, a different set of experiences and influences and yes, we have a different way of doing things. Our way tends to be be more quiet, out-side the box,and independent. Jon Stewart became one of the most influential and respected voices in politics by taking the helm of a relatively unknown basic cable comedy show. Grunge/Punk artists like Nirvana & the pioneers of hip-hop revolutionized music through underground movements. Larry Page & Sergy Brin brought their quiet storm to create Google and yes, 47 year old President Obama and his team of Gen-Xers quietly and innovatively took their out-side the box, long shot canidate all the way to 1600 Penn Ave.
