Dvorak Likes Linux

Almost all the newest hardware coming out has Linux support. The critical mass has been reached, and it's time everyone tried Ubuntu. » Full Story on PC Magazine

Hmm... I installed Ubuntu 8.10 on my Acer Aspire ONE netbook (120GB HDD version, w/Windows XP SP3 on one partition) and the first issue I had was that I lost all WiFi connectivity. There is a work around. However, its not that simple for non-Linux fans. Secondly, the default installation also breaks the LAN connection. Again, I needed to do a work around which will seem odd for non Linux users. The moral of this is that Ubuntu 8.10 is not ready for prime time. Until they manage to make Linux distros as simple to configure as the ubiquitous Microsoft Windows it will not make it into the mainstream.

I've been using Ubuntu for several years, and each issue gets better. The first thing a newbie wants to look for is their specific machine in the forums, or better yet just search the internet for it + linux. Saves a lot of time. The only thing I use Window$ for is my games, because I'm lazy and don't want to reinstall and lose all of those played games.
Have been experimenting with WINE and VirtualBox and they seem to work fine.

Hey all it will cost you is the price of a blank CD and some time to try it. You can buy an off lease computer for less than $125.00 that will run Linux just fine. There is nothing wrong with off lease computers and buying them is a great way to help the environment.

For a network administrator who has to support more than 10 workstations, it is wise to lease and then get new equipment after the lease runs out. This avoids the potential for patchwork repairs all over the place. These same computers are a great buy for the rest of us.

I have an off lease computer that I have been using every day at work that runs Ubuntu. After one year, the total cost of ownership of that computer is 31 cents a day.

I just started using Ubuntu recently, and I'm pretty impressed so far. Performance is better than XP, and the apps are generally comparable, but without the often prohibitive cost.

Some things are a tad fiddly to install, but I'll adapt soon enough. I'd say, if you're considering trying Ubuntu Linux, just download the live CD image and have a try. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

I have been using Linux for years and use it only if I have too. I have had nothing but trouble installing Kubuntu. First it did not like my ATI card then I could not get Dial Up working for it was set only for people with broad band. I downloaded several times a list of software that could be run on it and each time it lost the list some how. I am very unhappy with the problems connected with installing new software. Dependency's are still a night mare. It took me all day to download the dependences needed for KPPP a program used to set up a dial up connection. If you have a dial up connection they do not like you. I will always have a Linux installation on my computer but my main OS is still Win98se. Given a 2.8 MHZ Cpu Win98se just sings.
