Five Steps to Hiring a Tax Pro

Need professional help with your return? Here's how to find the right person for the job. » Full Story on Kiplinger.com

I find it surprising that Kiplinger and Ms. Huddleston do not know about the Enrolled Agent!. EAs are the only tax professionals licensed by Treasury to represent taxpayers before the IRS. They are required to take up to 90 hours of professional education every three years and most take many more. The National Association of Enrolled Agents is the professional organization that people needing tax advice should contact besides the other pros mentioned. That website lists NAEA menbers in the US by state and Zip. EAs have been around since the 1864 and officially in the tax business since about 1966. We are tested by Treasury in a grueling two day written Special Enrollment Examination. So you see, the EA should also be on that list of those to check out for your tax work. I am a retired EA but felt it necessary to contact you on this matter.
