Johann Hari: You Are Being Lied to About Pirates

Who imagined that in 2009, the world's governments would be declaring a new War on Pirates? As you read this, the British Royal Navy - backed by the ships of more than two dozen nations, from the US to China - is sailing into Somalian waters to take on men we still picture as parrot-on-the-shoulder pantomime villains. They will soon be fighting Somalian ships and even chasing the pirates onto… » Full Story on Huffington Post

Honest and well written.

(Oh, I just knew it----its all our fault----those pooooor pirates---They must all be such nice people, who luv their liddle chilllldren, & have puppies & flowers & babies and bunny rabbits all around their humble cottages. They just work like little elves, & we mustn't stop them! They are Peace-loving people who Don't like AK47's and Rocket Propelled Grenades. They've just been FORCED to shoot at ships by the Poverty brought by those Nasty Capitalists, and the Big Evil Corporations. We MUST have a Protest! Maybe we should all just hold our breath for 24 hours---that's it----let's not anybody breathe for just one day in protest----waaah!----or maybe we should just wet our panties---oh, I just DON'T know what to do---I'm so---so---so---WAAAAA!!!!) (Seriously, cont'd)

Seriously, people, the generalized description of the old pirates is a bit off the mark. My family tree is full of them. Mother's side. When their sanctioned thievery became too risky, they entered the slave trade. (One was killed by his slaves) When Slavery went out of business following the Civil War, they became attorneys. So far, nobody in the family tree has stooped so low as to become a journalist or run for political office, but there are a lot of Democrats in the clan. ;-)

Poverty does NOT breed crime. We need to look deeper.
Crime ALWAYS breeds Poverty, somewhere. Whether it's in the back alleys or the boardroom or on the high seas, crime breeds poverty. Illegal dumping, overfishing, AND piracy must be stopped.

If memory serves me correctly, isn't Somalia where Bubba Clinton turned tail and ran from street thugs?? If we would have stayed maybe, just maybe, we wouldn't have pirates or illegal dumping of nuclear/commercial/industrial waste offshore of Somalia???
I'm sure Obama-nation has the "change" cure for this problem on his agenda list(the bottom) as commander-in-chief, YIKES!!

Elvis sang the truth -- "In the Ghetto"
(also applies to Somalia, or anywhere the "real" robber-barons of the world hold sway)...

As the snow flies...

A poor little baby child is born
In the ghetto......
People, dont you understand
The child needs a helping hand
Or he’ll grow to be an angry young man some day
Take a look at you and me,
Are we too blind to see,
Do we simply turn our heads
And look the other way.......
And his hunger burns.......
And he learns how to steal
And he learns how to fight
In the ghetto
Then one night in desperation
A young man breaks away
He buys a gun, steals a car,
Tries to run, but he dont get far....
As a crowd gathers round an angry young man
Face down on the street with a gun in his hand
In the ghetto.....

It’s easy to condemn sitting on the sofa stuffing fat bellies with fast-foods. It is a bit different when you've not eaten for a couple of weeks, or months.

Evil always has the appearance of succeeding but it's just for a little while, even though it might be a year, two or thousand.

I have a paper due on Somalian Piracy this week, and I thought that this article was very well written and supplies valuable information on the topic.

As a man who works in advertising (and who's also a full-blown conspiracy nut), anytime i read about a single topic for more than a week, I wonder who's trying to sell me what. It's nice to finally see another angle on this.
