Teenager Falls Into Open Manhole While Texting [Texting]

As if you needed more evidence that texting is more dangerous than swine flu, a 15-year-old girl from Staten Island walked into an open manhole while texting. She's fine, don't worry, although she did lose a shoe in the sewer.

Alexa Longueira fell about 4 or 5 feet into an open manhole in Staten Island, scraping up her back and shoulders in the process, although she is otherwise physically… » Full Story on Gizmodo

To the Longueira family, Please tell us who you are planning to sue for your daughter's ignorance? What if she would have been driving and texting and killed someone and they sued you. Why don't you just be thankful that she was not seriously injured and as far as her mental injury, well maybe that will teach her a lesson about paying attention to what she is doing and only texting when she safely sitting down doing nothing else except texting.

McNair was a great football player, but with 4 kids and a pretty wife, he should have said "No" to temptation. What's a man proving when he's built a whole life around a family, then suddenly thinks he's "conquering" a 20 yr. old, impressionable girl? It's the oldest story in the world. Make noises like wifey's out, new girl's in, encourage her materially, and enjoy whatever are thought to be benefits. Oh yeah, you can end up dead! You want to play, guys? Then leave home, but support the family you made, and don't play both ends against the middle. It's not conducive to longevity.

Did any body happen to film this? I would pay cash money to see that . Walking and texting, she was probably chewing gum too. thats what did her in, the gum. She could become famous for this .Now, when someone does something really stupid we can say" Yeah, they did an Alexa" Reminds me of the time I saw another moron walk into the side of a moving bus during rush hour traffic. He said he didn't see the bus. That horses ass was reading a book and smoking a pipe. I wonder what was in the pipe.

Dang, my parents should have sued every time I did something stupid! I walked into the flagpole in junior high while I was reading a silly note my friend passed to me. Broke my nose. Should have sued the school. But, no, I had to pony-up my own money for plastic surgery after graduation. Boo-hoo....

The bigger point that the story did not comment on was the sewer cover, "Made in India". If New York City cannot buy sewer covers made in the USA, do we have any hope for American Industry. How much labor goes into making a sewer cover that it is cheaper to make it in India and ship it half way around the world.

I think she was "mentally injured" long BEFORE she did this; as are all the multi-texters that think they are omnipotent. She's lucky she only her herself & not anyone else (unlike the car drivers, train drivers, etc). I hope this gets thrown out of court & reminds people that (for the most part) stupidity & carelessness can get you injured, if not killed.

Wonder if all the calls and text msgs. we receive on cell phones are important. I still let voice msg. pick up my calls if at a grocery store, in transit, at an appt., or anywhere in public. I've had shoppers walk into me with their carts while talking on their phone or texting. Anyone with an emergency can leave a text with "EMERGENCY". I once got hit with a shopping cart carrying a baby while the mother concentrated on her cell call. I took the cart and gently shoved it into her which gave her a shock when she realized what could have happened.

To make a long story short, the incredibly stupid girl could have been seriously injured not to mention what it takes to rescue someone for something that stupid.

The workers should have had barricades out first. That establishes the city's culpability. She prudently should have not been walking while texting, and so her culpability as a sighted person cancels theirs.
It seems the city of NY owes her one shoe, no more, no less.

Both should sue India, on the premise more people fall down Indian manholes than any other kind. Really though, we should treasure the Indian covers as a reminder of how we have been sold out as a nation and how much rope is sitting unused in hardware stores across the nation.

Alexa Longueira fell about 4 or 5 feet into an open manhole in Staten Island, scraping up her back and shoulders in the process, although she is otherwise physically unharmed. Her mother noted that she was also mentally injured, as the sewer was "putrid" and one of her shoes remains down there. Apparently, there were some DEP workers on the scene who were "looking" for cones to mark the area when the girl fell in.
---------------

I hope that there was a mental eval done before this incident.
How do you get mentally injured because the sewer was putrid?

That's the great society we have. Sue someone else for your own stupidity. No wonder our country is so messed up. People that constantly blame someone else for their bad behavior.
What ever happened to individual responsibility???????
People who sue like this are just leeches on society, we will always be paying for them one way or another. Lowlife scum!!!

It certainly seems strange to fall in a manhole while doing anything with all the necessary precautions or obstructions which prevail in the US cities. It appears to be a well intentioned act of negligence of the injured for an attempted monetary gain. Times are bad in the country but so bad was not imaginable. God bless America

I hope this is a valuable lesson to all the people that text while doing other things. This show you how dangerous it can be for a person.
Save that message until your not preoccupied with something else. Lives could even depend on it. Maybe not yours but it could cost someone else their life.

Suing? What a GREAT way to teach your child about responsibility! Stupid parents!

People also get hit by cars while crossing the street and texting. So maybe this lesson taught her to watch where she's going so she doesn't end up in the morgue!

I hope the judge realizes this is stupid, and that it dose get thrown out of court. She was stupid, carless etc.. to be walking, and texting at the same time. it is her OWN fault she fell, other wise if she was paying attention to where she was going maybe she would have noticed a man whole. But like may teens today, the texting has to come first. As others have said Thank God she was not driving.

Granted that she's not the sharpest blade in the shed, but I do have one question on this. Where the hell was the parents, when she dropped into the manhole? How come they didn't go with her? Guess they they better teach her how to walk! What is she doing with a phone anyway? Guess that she can't handle a phone at all! Teens shouldn't have phones anyway, not till they are 21 years of age!
